Tornado Pic

darkstar is right, the uk gets more tornadoes than anywhere else in the world per unit area. but texas, oklahoma, and kansas alone (not to mention the whole of the usa) get more tornadoes (reported) than any single country. texas alone has had over 5,500 tornadoes in the past 50 years. oklahoma is a distant second with something like 2500. so those two states combined account for over 150 tornadoes annually, on average. i used to know why this was (it has to due with the orientation of the rockies to the rest of the continent or something).

The UK actually gets around 50-60 reported tornadoes per annum which is actually more than the reported number per annum in the US. However almost ALL tornado's within the UK are tiny, hardly ever going above the F1 scale. Tornado's in the US however happen on amuch grander scale.

That vid was interesting although it wasn't a tornado, just what many people refer to as a 'dust devil'

we can get twice as many as that with a single storm front.....

I think the average for the past 3 years is like 1200 per year.

It has to do with the cold air coming from the Rockies, meetin dry air coming up from Mexico and warm moist air coming up from the Gulf. They usually converge over the area known as "Tornado Alley".

Where I live, we call those dust devils "Willy-Willies". I think it's an aboriginal word, some dialect or other.

I once saw one whirl its way into the local shopping centre (Open air)... It zoomed straight over the little wooden corral thingy that they kept all the empty cardboard boxes in...

Now THAT was something to see...

Heh, pretty darn convenient they meat there eh...Imagine if they touched down in "Windless Valley", noone would guess they were in any danger.

Willy-Willies....You just made that up didn't you :P Seriously though, thats really an aboriganal name? Pretty funny if you ask me, especially because people would probably say things like "Those little devils give me the willies."

Nope. Not made up. It really is "Willy-willy". Though it should probably be spelt "Willi-willi". I'm pretty sure that word-doubling represents abundance in many aboriginal dialects... I.e: If "Willi" means "Wind", "Willi-willi" means "Shitloads of wind"...

Yeah...I didn't really think it was made up but you have to admit willy willy is quite humerous in a childish sort of way :)

That is a dustdevil. They happen all the time in Arizona.

Hence I see them often. I once saw a plastic shopping bad atleast a 1/2 mile straight up from a dust devil. I have seen them take lawn chairs too.

Also, why were they playing soccer in the dirt
