I read on a halflife 2 modding site that it is possible to make a fully destructable level. This includes the ground that is also deformable. what i would like to know is if you had a watch tower and took out 1 or 2 of the leg would the others snap and the wholething come crasing down. If so a few well placed charges could take out a building! And that will certainly make for some interesting tatics.

I'm sure you could do this. It will just be up to the level designer. However, fully destructable terrain and architecture would likely bring most computers to a standstill.

It's not implemented in HL2 for gameplay reasons, though this could be possible in the upcoming mods. The physics are the main thing that is driving the source engine.

The given example (a watch tower) would be possible, but you'd have to do such things sparingly - you certainly couldn't make a map that consisted entirely of physically simulated (i.e. destructible) objects.

some people seem hell bent on trying to though, heh...

that would be possible red faction style. but realisticaly, you will never accomplish this with the current hardware (don't know about havok's capabilities on this)

Heh got that right. Gonna be hell playing those maps, lots of people complaining about them not working properly.

As for the mention of Red Faction that keeps cropping up, it ain't red faction, the displacement modeling is nothing like that in Source. All displacement will achieve is making rock and caves look a bit nicer when built in Hammer, and maybe the odd bit where the ground moves like in the E3 demo.

not Redfraction

No this isnt possible in read fraction as things have no weight. you can knock out all supports on a platform and it will hover in the air like majic. Hopefull halflife 2 wont work like this.

I think a destructable watchtower wouldn't be to hard on the cpu. Just make it kinda low-poly and it shoudn't be more cpu intensive then a couple of falling barrels.

watching a watch tower explode at the base and come crashing down destroying other buildings with combine heli's flapping around and A couple striders, people gibbing and the world imploding on its out dimesion... i see the action now.

Of course you could build up a scout tower (think of the one in FarCry), and blow off the legs if you add 'func breakable' to it. Jesus Christ, look at the traptown video with the container.

From this article:

Half-Life 2 looks magnificent; the game physics look phenomenal. As an example there was this chasing scene with a helicopter in an empty water reservoir. The bullets rippled the ample water still in the reservoir around your character. After a while the helicopter started shooting rockets, debris everywhere! The deformability of the terrain is massive! Half-Life 2 comes (for selected graphics cards) with high-res textures, which will make this seem even more beautiful.

I wonder what that means.

I don't even want to think about something like that, it'd make me want it too much.

I think it'll be extremely cool, but very heavy on the pc. Maybe once the "Longhorn-ready" PCs come out...

More than anything I want to be able to play HL2 fluidly so I can actually enjoy multiplayer. I think once the game is out we should organise a big HL2 forum member's frag fest :D

Assuming HL2 multiplayer isn't chess...

Destructability of objects makes it a lot more fun to play games. I really hope HL2 will incorporate a lot of it, without affecting the hardware specs drastically.

But as said earlier, a watchtower collapsing in a way you describe would be possible with the source engine

Well yes but the grenade could have destroyed both the lefthand supports and the others dont breack but more tilt. And the thing slide off. Im sure it will work as I would like it to I was just looking for confomation.
