Yeah, I start the single player mode. The white flash inbetween seeing the Gman and getting on the train kinda freezes up for a moment before you're given control of gordon. After that, you see the train pulling into the station as normal, but as soon as it reaches the platform, lockup and I have no control over the system. I'm forced with resetting the PC.

Now I've had problems with HL2 in the past. My previous system was Athlon 2800 2.1 GHz with all of my current hardware (Radeon 9800 Pro, 1024 mb of pc2700), and after I updgraded the ram to 1 GB from 512 MB, the game ran GREAT. Not a problem except for the occasional expected stutter from this buggy game.

Now I have upgraded to an Athlon 64 3500+, the rest of hte hardware the same. I have tried turning off HD lighting, turning the graphics down, ALL of drivers are up to date, (unfortunately, on this Gigabye board, I can't find the option to disable Fastwrites, on that note, if anyone knows how to on a Gigabyte K8 Triton, lemme know, thanks) and I'm at my wit's end. I've had crashing problems in HL2DM before when using the flashlight, but I chalk that up to having HD on. But even so, it shouldn't be doing this.

I don't wanna give up on this game. It's one of my absolute favs. In closing, free the west memphis three.

Hmm... Well, if you didn't have any noteworthy problems before upgrading, it's probably the upgrade. Do you still have the old Athlon? Have you tried replacing it again to see if it still crashes? If that's the case, then you probably have a (seemingly unsolvable) hardware conflict.

did you do HD Defragmenter yet?

I've never heard of this? What be it?

And I don't have the older athlon anymore.

Tried pressing Control+F1 at the main menu of the BIOS? On all recent Gigabyte boards it reveals hidden options.

I actually just figured that out today and messed around with the settings. I'll have to tweak it some more. Right now I'm running with my Memory at +.1v, a setting I have on that helped with my Far Cry problems. Now I have my RAM clock speed down to 133 from 200.

None of these did anything to HL2 though... LIke... nothing... I just ran HL2 again a minute ago, and the entire system froze as usual... I have the right power supply and everything, 420W. Any takers?

UPDATE:

Okay so basically I've got HL2 all updated and shizzle, and the main game is virtually unplayable in its current state. So I said screw it and tried some mods.

I loaded up a mod or two and realized something... EVERY Time a monster made its presence on the screen, the game would either crash out or do freeze up the same way the main game does. Not only that, but I remember when I played HL2:DM online, the game would stutter excessively, and would very often crash when a rocket was launched, a grenade was thrown, or even when a flashlight was turned on.

Questions? Ideas? Comments? I'd like to know please, I REALLY .... REALLY love this game. :-P

Hmm... Sounds like the game crashes when a certain function or graphical command is called...

Maybe it's the hardware (the graphic card, the RAM) or software (the Source engine), I don't know.

You should post a Steam Support Ticket. (Include as much as information as possible, and give them an e-mail address where they can contact you :p)

I'm gonna try messing with the BIOS settings before I start any of that. I need a restart right now anyway. :)

UPDATE: Okay, I dun need help anymore. I tweaked the BIOS considerably. Now I can play the game! and CS:S runs BEAUTIFULLY with me bots (I'm dialup). I had to do the following to get it to work as it does now:

Turned the AGP to 4x, disabled fastwrites (as I meant to do anyway), and turn the RAM timing to 1T. Comment?
