There are a few countries in eastern europe that speak russian, (and bits of it) i heard ages and ages ago (pehaps in the valve info topic) from gabe or sombody that they used alot of different europian languages mixed together when doing the art, so the city represents everywhere and nowhere.

Sorry Dr Breen sounds too much like Mr Bean to me, so his villianness goes down 76%.

Same here. They should just stick a turkey on his head.

tren is russian for train.

No! "Poezd" is Russian for train. Where did _you_ study Russian? :rolling:

It's one of the Eastern European languages, something like Polish or Czech. Remarkably, everything looks incredibly authentic. I think by hiring Antonov, the Russian artist, they acquired a lot more than just pretty industrial architecture and landscapes. More importantly, they got boatloads of stories about oppressive governments. :borg:

Sounds like:

There is another row of boards somewhere nearby [out of the shot] that says: "Arrivals". :)

City 17 is probably named because it's the 17th city the combine have 'secured'. They could have chosen it as the administration for a few reasons... There was little resistance, or on a different note, maybe there was a lot of resistance and they wanted to quash it. Maybe it has a significant geographical/locational advantage, or there are some issues of importance inside the city [labs, or other plot secrets].

Dr Breen sounds like Bean. Fascinating. Look at the character, not at the name. "Gordan Freeman? Hah, God on Free Man more like, Geddit, geddit?! Or maybe-". Yeah. Great.

Tren, or Poezd... Who knows? Babelfish says 'train' converts to russian 'поезд'. Which means... Something. I'd say the language is a different european language, but it still probably equates to 'train' anyway.

They could be sending the civilians [resistance or no] to death camps, control camps, prisoner camps, etc... They could even be shifting the population around, like Indonesia is doing. Even it out a little bit, put people out of their familiar environment to make them uneasy and quiten down any possible attemps at resistance.

In short, we'll find out for HL2. :) Well, maybe not... The ending of HL1 was reasonably cliff-hangy. You didn't find out who the G-Man was, or anything like that. HL2 could be the same - it might not be the deciding factor of HL conspiracy theories.

Come on people, get real. There's a limited amount of texture memory they can use. Would you rather see a complete train schedule for the next year than highly detailed characters?

There's not much going on in the scenes (Explosions, destructible things), they could easily have pumped in some extra other stuff.

I hear something like:

"They're always departing but they never arrive, and the ones that do are always full, no one ever gets on but they're... they're always departing but they never arrive."

Then he repeats it. Basically, he's rambling like a lunatic.

If you look at the screenshot, both the boards have the same numbers etc, in fact, they're the same texture.

mabey that's why there's no trains arriving, valve's stingey on the textures ;p

I'm wondering why they have skipped City 14? Maybe the Combine don't (should it be *don't*?) like the Coal-14 method? ;)

What I am thinking is, all citizens from other cities are escaping to city 17. City 17 is the capital of all cities, and trains are arriving but not leaving means, no one wants to leave, but .......................OHHHHHHHHH just wait for the game and play it guys.
