Yea! I've finally ordered all the parts to my new computer! However, I've got one more question:

I am going to need to transfer data (about 10 gigs) from my laptop to the new computer. However, At home (where I'm assembling the new computer), we still only have a dial-up connection. Thus it is impossible to hook up both computers at once, and practically useless to use the internet connection for any purpose.

Is there someway to hook up the two computers directly via a network cable or something since both have LAN cards? I've seen FTP programs, but can you use them with a direct connection? What would be the best way to transfer data other than burning dozens of CD's or waiting several years over dial-up?

Thanks for your help in advance.

get a crossover cable, so you can connect both computers via cat5. then from there, you can use windows fie sharing, or yeah you could also set up an FTP server on one.

FYI Crossover Cables are yellow and have 8 pins just like a normal Patch cable. ;)

Or buy a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter and put your laptop HDD into your new desktop temporarily.

What's the difference between cat5 and cat6? I seem to be finding a lot of cheap cat6 crossover cables, but relatively few cat5 crossovers. Are they functionally the same?

Yep, same thing. Cat 6 is actually a better cable as it's insulated better and they don't bend as easy.

I wouldn't recommend getting a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE cable as I have heard of many people blowing there laptop HD's as they get the polarity of the power connecter wrong when connect it up. Best way would be to use a cat 5 crossover cable.

:P
or you coulde be lazy and put the cross over calbe in, connect one pc to the net, conenct the laptop thrut he other pc to then net, go on msn and then just doa rar. store of the 10 gbs and send it at full speed with out all the mapping of netowkr drives,

you can use the wizard to patch the netowrk up to :p

lazy way to transfer all your porn and music

haha...the problem is the net connection...we only have dial-up at home = 1 computer at once = take forever to transfer 10 gigs.

The crossover cables sound like they should work. Thanks for all your help!

dialup does more than one at once mate, i had 6 comps on one 56k conneciton:)

You could do this, but can you be bothered to wait while you transfer all the files at 4 to 6kb/s? Gonna take a long time! Would be faster using your CAT5 cable as you will get theoretically 1.25mb/s on a 10mbit lan connection.
