Traptown questions

After watching it a few times I have two questions.

1. Is it just me or is the "bad guy" that is outside the window shooting at the spot where the "player" is not and the player then appears to move to that spot.

2. The part where the "container" falls after having its support knocked out by a grenade, appears to have an enemy walking away from the spot only to "rush" back to it to get crushed.

Does anyone else think this.

And if anyone is keeping up I did not get the 9800 256 at the show this weekend. No one had one. Ordering it online at the begining of Nov. Got an Asus A7N8X-X and an AMD 2800.

It's been discussed.

1. Unexplained, but probably a logical explanation

2. The AI was told to operate within a certain area to have the maximum effect. I guess the AI made him change direction within the area a little too fast.

Cool thanks. Search on Traptown gave me quite a few responses. The ones I read had nothing to do with it.

Thanks again.

1. Cover fire (topic of many conspiracy theories on this forum)
2. You hear a grenade explode. Where do you run?

some issues had to do with demo playback as well.. such as the wood breaking before his crowbar hit it, or the guys being knocked over before the metal swung into them..

but it won't seem like that while playing the game realtime.

Has anyone ever heard of False advertising?
ITS AGAINST THE LAW. IF IT IS ADVERTISED THEN IT WILL BE THEIR OR THEY CAN GET A LAWSUIT

Thats exactly true. The player is to the left a good 5 feet from where the enemy is shooting, but once the bullets fly the player actually moves towards the place where the guy is shooting and kneels down behind the washer machine.

Valve had it set up so that all the enmies would be killed by the traps. IMO it ruined the effect. As if enemies are just gonna stand there and let the iron bar swing down and kill them, or run back under the "container" as its falling. Looks silly.

what do you mean?

are you even serious?

Throughout all the videos, the AI does what i will call 'supressing fire'. Before the dumpster falls, the combine are firing over their heads at your last known location. Notice they don't try to fire into the wall like idiots. When you pass the window with the blinds on it, a combine fires throug the hwindow and hits the blinds, even though you are not directly in front of the window. the combine knows you're up there, he just can't get a good shot on you, so he does the next best thing. Also notice he doesn't just shoot into the wall like he knows your exact position.

I think it's pretty amazing AI. When have you ever seen a game where the AI fires at where he thinks you'll pop out of next?

This man is a troll , please do not respond to him.

Everyone talks about the 'player' as if he were part of the AI!!! Obviously the dev who was playing thought it would be cooler to take cover behind the washer and have bullets flying over head , plus he probably knew they were coming through the door soon.

Oh yeah... I remember a pretty funny theory in which the enemy had something against washing machines...

Errrr. He actually (as a few others do) makes sense. I even said player. We cant say anything but player in describing the view from the...er...uh player.

But how can you critizie the player for not being at a certain place and then going over there later?

are you insane? we're talking about a video showing off a game, we're not talking about an advertisement for a game, there arent even claims made in the video, WTF are you on about?

But if you watch the video the "enemy" is firing at a spot the "player" is not. Then it appears the player realizes this and goes to that spot. The bad guy is shooting up the wash machine (as someone said earlier) then the player runs behind it as an "after" thought.

listen, the enemy outside the window couldnt see gordon where he was, so what would you do if you were outside, and you had already tried the door which was barracaded? hmm? i think it was smart to shoot at the washing machine, either if the player is behind it it might scare them out into the open or might hold them in the room until another combine comes and kicks the door open.

I dont think people are mad at the AI, I think they are mad because the player ran behind where it was shooting to make it seem like they were shooting at him

or you know, getting out of the way of the table that is about to get kicked into the wall...

lol u saying that just made me think of something.. it would be cool if the player got hit with enough force he would fall, even though actually your screen would just go to the floor and take a couple seconds before it gets back, your animation could be a partial rag doll.. that would be nice exspeically in mplayer
edit: oh and a getting up animation

This will happen in doom3, but not hl2. in doom3 when the player dies and falls to the ground the camera view stays in his head and you witness your body being torn apart and eaten by whatever killed you, in first person. badass.

i wrote out a big response but i realized it doesnt matter how logical it seems i wont be able to convince you or anyone else who is bound and determined to think the player was off cue, or moved there to make it seem like he was getting shot at or anything else, so i won't bother.

I dont mean when you die, I mean if you just toppled of your feet by a huge blast or a push or something

u dont have to because its common sense to get away from the door if someone was chasing you

Brassmonkey, why do you come to a HL2 fan board?

for the ego boost, cause he has no common sense, but he can say "owned' to people and make himself feel good, heh, heh.

Xtasy is just about the only one making any sense in this thread.

He also could have walked over to the washing machine because it provided cover from which he could get a firing angle on the enemy and also because he had to go that way as it led to the only way out of that room. :|

for people curious, stuff that you download is not required to follow the same advertising laws that a billboard or a newspaper ad has to. Because you are making the choice to download it.

A good example of this is the BMW mini-films. It is against U.S. law to have car ads that encourage reckless driving/behavior (though they push the envelope). Clearly, many of the mini-films violate this. But it's ok since you make the choice to download them.

The same sort of logic applies to half-life.

On the other hand, John Romano never made me his bitch, despite promising to in print. So I think I'll sue him.

Yeah if someone was shooting at me I'd leg it to some cover near my exit point, and I'd wait for the bullets to stop for a moment before I jumped out.

Didn't it ever occour to anyone that maybe the AI was just trying to shout out the window glass so maybe he could get a better angle into the room? When i saw that, i figured the enemy was only shooting to get rid of the glass, not to kill gordan (cause gordan wasn't near the window).

The fact that the bullets happened to land near the exit point might be a complete coincidence. Or maybe they were trying to simply supress somebody they knew was in the room but couldn't see, so they fire randomly. That just doesn't look like a missed "cue" at all.

HAHAHAHAH

so it takes 20 bullets to break a window? lmao, smart AI
