A friend and I were both looking to "get away from it all" for a while, so we visited Maui for a week. Between the sunsets/sunrises and the scenery in general, it's truly a beautiful place. We did some of the usual tourist crap, which included snorkeling off the coast of Molokini, the tour bus ride around the entire island (stopping for pictures/food/bathrooms/winery), and the Old Lahaina Luau. All of which were actually a lot of fun. But there was one thing that kind of nagged me the entire time... my friend.
I knew her before we went to Maui, but it was as if someone flicked a light switch in her head once we got on the plane to leave. She went from sweet, supporting, and playful to extreme bitch in .26 nanoseconds. Now, I know she isn't exactly a fan of flying, so I chalked it up to flight anxiety and decided to let it go. But as the week progressed, the attitude just got worse and worse. And whenever she got alcohol in her system, she went from "extreme bitch" to "extremely annoying bitch".
Every time I went to a bar with her, I had other people come up to me and make off-hand remarks about how she just doesn't shut the hell up (they put it in more friendly terms). And since what they were saying was true, I couldn't really debate it. So I stopped going to the bars with her. I don't mind having a few drinks at night, or even getting hammered one or two nights during the week. But I didn't travel to Maui to sit in a bar and drink 12 hours straight. I could do that at home and frankly, it's a waste of money. But that seemed to be her "thing," so I let it go under the circumstance that this was her vacation, too. How she chooses to spend her vacation is up to her.
There were a few other things that happened during the week that lead me to believe she has a constant need for attention. In other words, she has to be in the spotlight at all times. If she's not, she gets bored and turns into a nag. Strange that I didn't notice that earlier.
So what's the point of this post? Whenever you travel, make sure you bring a somewhat compatible person with you.
