Twitter

its basically the status option in facebook, i don't really need it

what's that? phobie has a vagina? I did not know phobie had a vagina. It turns out phobie has a vagina!

Why I use twitter? The same reason I do most things in life. The same reason you people post on a forum. I use twitter because no-one can stop me and tell me they don't care, because it'd be going out of their way, and frankly no-one wants to go out of their way. Plus, because everyone else is doing it, it's socially acceptable to a degree, and no-one can accuse the other of attention seeking.

Sure, everyone wants everyone to care, but no-one does. With twitter, you can seek as much attention as you want without the risk of getting caught. It doesn't matter whether anyone cares or not, because it still seeds the hope that someone's reading.

I know no-one cares when I tweet, but I do it anyway. It's all we have.

somebody make a twitter and make several comments about how you posted a comment on an hl2.net thread about how twitter is dumb

I don't understand why you would go through the hassle to tell your stalkers what you're doing, so they don't have to leave the house.

I'm proud to have never gone to twitter.com.

It's an utterly ridiculous concept and a sad reflection of our times. Concerns about having personal information and pictures splashed all over the internet aside, regardless of whether you even have an account yourself, I don't have a problem with stuff like Facebook. It's a useful tool for keeping in touch with people who you might not be bothered to pick up the phone to, and for sharing photos etc. I don't like the way it's used by some people as some sort of "ooh look how popular and dynamic and awesome I am" contest. If you were that ****ing popular, dynamic and awesome, you wouldn't be trying to convince the interweb in the first place.

Twitter offers none of the useful functionality and is merely another banal way for people to pass the time pretending to be popular, dynamic and awesome, without actually living any kind of life at all. Why would you tell the world every single thing you're doing at any given moment? WHY?! Who gives a shit? Who actually dashes to the computer to let everyone and noone know that they're going to the pub, before they go out the door?

The internet and associated technology is incredible. Its popular applications are, increasingly, a step backwards for the human race and not forwards. The internet is not a replacement for real social contact, and by treating it as such we're breeding a generation of inept people who lack even basic social skills, and who can't cope without being constantly "wired in" in some form.

Not good. Not healthy.

People need to learn to spell out their sentences already, and a 140 character limit doesn't help.

It makes me sad to know that the new phenomenon sweeping the world involves obsessively checking people's "Twitter" pages to read completely worthless information of utterly no consequence, whilst simulteneously polluting the highways of the internets with the same pointless junk.

At the same time, anything risky or out of the ordinary is frowned upon. Everything has to be ultra-safe and ultra-mundane. There was a time when we celebrated pioneers and frowned upon pointless, banal activity which accomplishes nothing whatsoever. Just like how university has gone from being a training ground for the elite to a place where any old moron can go and drink themselves into a coma and occasionally do some work for some shit useless course that will gain them or society nothing (even though I have to pay for their three year aversion to doing any real work), as usual these days we have it arse-****ing-backwards yet again.

I'm rarely mad at all. Certain things just wind me up.

Our society of unthinking automatons obsessed with the trivial and the mundane is one of those things. Amazing technologies being turned primarily to trivial and mundane purposes is another of those things.

It will be the downfall of Western society, in one way or another. Just look how every great civilisation fell. Through loss of focus, apathy and internal collapse.

Twitter is the embodiment of all that is wrong with our society today.

I hope you're banned.

And I don't know why people who dislike twitter get so worked up. There arguments consist of how 'they wouldn't be doing so and so if they didn't have a life'. True, but you wouldn't be arguing against it if you didn't care.

I do care. Like the success of reality TV, it shows how our society is obsessed with the mundane and the pedestrian, at the expense of actually accomplishing anything worthwhile.

What do we have to be proud of anymore? Nothing.

Why? Because we're a nation of pointless people with no ambition, leading pointless lives interested only in the pointless lives of others. We no longer accomplish anything, the best we can manage is to squabble over trivial bullshit like how to avoid offending people, or why cars are bad and how we should intentionally hamper the transport infrastructure supposedly to "save the planet".

The rot has set in, and the glory days are long since behind us.

Well played.

*fist* DRUCKLES

Blame the media. So much materialistic shit around, we're all just blind, self-centered bitches, too obsessed about seeming selfless, we become all the more self-obsessed.

You spout the truth from your truth nozzle , like some kind of truthful watering can.

Very true. Madeleine McCann and Jade Goody hysteria for example...a preposterous farce that gives numpties everywhere an outlet to show the world that "they care".

Twitter is also a form of media. Ultimately, it's people taking the easy option. Getting all wrapped up in the drama of some dumbshit celebrity of dubious value and passing the time through obsessively checking messages online takes no effort. It's the instant gratification and chronic impatience thing.

Going out there and doing something that takes time and effort produces so much more of a reward, but people just don't have it in them anymore. When people do take it upon themselves to do something challenging, they feel obliged to do so "for charity". For some reason it's not acceptable anymore to do something challenging just for the sake of doing it.

Doesn't take a genius to work out the cumulative effect of all this on the state of our society.

Cheer up, @repiV. Civilization isn't that depraved yet. Things can get a lot worse than they are now. Don't let the recession-depression get you down.

EDIT Is your current sentiment caused by that camping trip you went on?

lol :)

That's a self-fulfilling prophecy as well. I'm far better off now in a more stable position than I have ever been before, recession hysteria itself causes the recession! And we're back to the media and the panic of idle people.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy. I live in a great place, and I love it. The problem is that we could be so, so much better than we are. There's a general rot in the attitude of people these days, that will only ever lead us downhill.

EDIT Is your current sentiment caused by that camping trip you went on?

Nope.

Druckles hit the nail on the head though. Selfish people pursuing supposedly selfless causes, solely to make themselves feel righteous. I'm convinced that's what modern socialism is all about.

I don't understand why people are surprised by egocentrism (*goes off to check that that's a word*). Honestly, people view the world through the filter of their senses and thoughts, never having anything but miniscule connections to others, while their actual consciousness remains completely segregated from the rest of the world. If I'm the only person I truly know or understand, it makes sense that I should be self-centered.

We could if everyone would be altruistic and stopped caring about their individual needs and turned that energy to the common good. That's a Utopian fantasy though. People will still be putting themselves first and that is only natural. You could call it egotistical, but an alternative term would be instinct. Media - be it narrow casting like Twitter or broadcasting like E! News - are just putting a sort of magnifying glass on it.

It's not always possible to do things anymore. Waves of apathy do nothing to help the already weak-minded individuals who have had it too easy for too long. The brain may speak of productivity and motivation, but the body simply doesn't react.

It's not people acting in their own interests that I have a problem with. I mean, the common good on the societal level is a misnomer anyway since one person's good is another person's bad. Do-gooders and busybodies cause more problems than they solve in most cases.

But people pursuing useful goals for their own benefit helps everyone. More skills, wisdom, common sense, fitness or other things gained from productive hobbies adds to the pool of knowledge and skills. People striving to achieve raises the bar for everyone, driving progress. Look at who we value. Do you want a nation of engineers, or a nation of reality TV "stars"?

Unfortunately, the UK also seems to suffer quite uniquely from an intense envy and hatred of successful people. We have a kind of reverse snobbery, where the wealthy, intelligent, well spoken or otherwise successful are looked down upon. There's nothing the British love more than to take someone down a peg. In America, if you drive a Ferrari people say "nice car dude, hope I can afford one some day". Over here, they call you a smug **** and vandalise it.

There's also a marked difference between being selfish and being self-obsessed.

Today I have learnt the following:
  • Everyone in America says dude
  • repiv has moobs and is mad at the world
  • Everything used to be made of gold but now it is made from reality.
  • repiv and druckles know a lot of people. I must find out who these people are.

And you believe that I'd ever reach out of my self-obsessed shell long enough to discuss anyone other than myself? I mock your assumption that the word "people" was ever meant to be taken literally.

@faggowlegaysparrow You missed out the @Druckles.
