Right, while I'm waiting for the SDK to properly work on Operation Everlasting Shadow, I thought I'd build up my game designer portfolio by working on little designdocs for side projects that I may enlarge down the line.

Here's two ideas I came up with during a hard day's work, please vote on which one you like the most:

Dissident
The USA of A never took part in World War One, the Lucitaina was never sunk, the torpedo missed by inches. England tryed to hold out, but was kicked off the continent. The Russians pulled out, and became communists, like before. Germany and Austro-Hungary carved up central Europe, and America took England under it's wing. After a while, the UK became another State of the USA. Nazism never happened. Russia began to get stronger and stronger, and eventually ousted Germany from the entirety of Europe, and took power. The rest of the world was carved up between the two Hyper-powers as they squared off. The year is now is now 1960. The USSR and the USA are squarely opposed, the only two countries in the world. However, in the late 60's revolution brewed in the the State of England. This revolt was brutally put down. The USA had by now found a very quick and easy way of excecution. They rounded up the families and survivors of the revolt, put them on a ship, and sent them Russia-wards. They were never seen again, with the exception of the wife of the instigator. She was spared by the Russian Kill-teams, since she was being pregnant. It was hoped that she would give birth to a strong son, who the USSR could manipulate and use to bring down the USA. She gave birth to a girl. Furious, her russian supervisor ordered her excecution, and the baby girl was given to an orphanage. Her story should have ended there. It didn't.

just the beginnings of an epic story... want to hear more?

heres the other idea:

Grace of God
Man has corrupted what was once thought pure. God. Instead of worshipping a diety, the clergy turned to worshipping idols and money, and oppressing the populace. Huge golden effigys dominate the town squares and the peasents walk in rags. Edicts are hammered out on beaten copper and given to the people. It is the year 1000BC, and all is not right with the State of the Godly. 500 years pass, and the church investigating science, since they are the only ones in the grace of god, and therefore pure. Compulsory donations are rising, and the Mighty Church is in charge of any inventions. Golden armoured Protectors armed with deadly Edict launchers pace the streets and the fear of the church is in the hearts of the people.

also wants to be expanded... would like to know the rest of my idea?

Excellent ideas you have there. I really love the story behind Dissident. Very creative and original :). The Grace of God of is also very interesting, it's scary as well since it's not as far from the truth as it sounds. I would love to hear more about both, it's nice to see originality in writing for games:) It's a rare thing.

honestly...no i dont dig them a lot..the first one has a good begining, but well... i just cant see what the gameplay should be like in the two....but as stories, they are good..but nothing gamewise special in my opnion.

AH, good ol' USA of A

ah but seriously, I like the first idea because WWI & WWII, and Communism interest me lot

To much pro America/England story.. I don't like that at all...

voted for 2nd option

Very good ideas there. I chose Grace of God since it seems to be the most unique of the two. Dissident is something much closer to other games and mods already done, although it is still a good story.

I'm curious as to what the gameplay would be like in Grae of God. What type of genre did you have in mind?

I was thinking of a slightly RPG-alike with Grace of God, with you as a lowly church-fearing peasent, you can wander around chatting to people, and striring up a little trouble, or take part in revolutions that will happen every so often, little rebellions and stuff... kinda hard to explain. Eventually building up to the point when you yourself are strong enough to take on the church :)

Btw Hudson, you won't think that when I expand the story :)

Crap, at first I read "Grape of God" :p

Anyway, the first idea does seem better... The second just seem odd. Very odd. Not to mention, I fail to grasp the concept of the timeline...

Timeline?

I already have an idea of what the cover of Grace of God would be:

A man, clad in rags , with a fist in the air, in front of a massive golden statue/temple :)

I personally like 'em both, but GoG is that little bit more emotive to me. I like the idea of a huge rabble of be-ragged people throwing stones at golden-armoured warrior, and eventually bringing him down. :D

This is supposed to be fictional?
Dissident: I assume you've read 1984? :p

Both interesting ideas. Personally I prefer the first premise but I'm not so sure where you'd go from there. Although I'm guessing only you could answer that...
Is Everlasting Shadow still in progress?

I know of 1984... and the idea behind Grace of God was that it is fictional, and that as a character you could choose your own path in the game: Atheist or Believer (more to be expanded... and believing in your own god, not what you are told... )

Dissident is different I believe, well, read on:

The girl got older, and soon it became apparent how different she was to the wishes of the USSR. At the age of 16 she already had learned to detest the authoritarian state orphanage, and by 17 she had ran away into the countryside. Filthy and dejected, she hitchhiked her way throuh the country....

My comment of Grace of God being "fictional" was a wee joke. A mean joke at that.
The mention of 1984 was basically because the idea of "Hyper-powers" was central to the plot (There were 3: Oceania - basically the US & UK alliance you described; Eurasia - the continent, and I think Africa; and Eastasia (the East, natch) So, if you didn't know that already then congratulations! You have an imagination of Orwellian standards: Truly superb!

What I meant was, you are talking about priests and the church and so on, the suddenly say 1000BC, it doesnt make sense. That is what I mean with not grasping the timeline. Is it fiction? Is it some sort of pararell universe? Is it something that somehow existed before Christ (well duh :p) that got lost along the way?

I dont get it. I dont grasp it :)

Woah! I havn't actually read the book :D ... damn cool :)

Oh, and Operation Everlasting Shadow is still going strong... never you worry ^_^

By the way.... I like your sig, somes up what I think about the delay :p

EDIT: Dawdler: the idea is that it is 1000BC our time, it's something that got lost along the way, sort of like the aztecs, but way more technologically advanced. In my mind's eye it's a kind of lost continent, shrouded in mist, that has never been discovered.

answered your question?

answered your question?
Yes, kind of. Atlantis, but not known of :)
I wouldnt use 1000BC though if I where you... Its just confusing when involving the word Church...

Maybe "In an unknown kingdom far far away not so very long ago"?
Yes I suck at dramatic writing :p
Or you could simply use 3000 years ago.

Heh... ah well, there is more than one church you know... but I think I'll use 3000 years ago then :p

Thanks anyway... but what do you think of the idea(s)?

I quite like the second one. Not entirely sure why, perhaps because it seems more plausible.
The first one though, it seems...wishy washy (from the latin wishus washi, meaning happy clappy:p). It just doesnt seems right. I mean, the part about America not coming into the war almost works, but that ship sinking was only one part of them entering the war anyway. England becoming a state of the USA would just not happen.

The first one your be good if u could kick usa's ass instead, Communism rocks! The second one sounds good however rebelions are my kind of thing ;)

Oh for god's sakes... I'll have to explain the final idea behind the first one:

Bring down the hyperpowers. Both.

I almost liked the first one more, so i will vote for 'Dissident' :)

BTW, Good job with the stories Badger.

yeah i love the idea for "Dissident"! I would like to see more change in the world, maybe instead of Russia or the US the Ottoman empire. It was destroyed partially because of the war.
BTW, remember that WW's 1 + 2 allowed the US to become a superpower: It supplied they money to jumpstart our economy, and got us out of our isolationist funk. Ooh, what if Japan had been able to conquer the us and china and stuff...

Heh, thanks

Since I plan to become a professional games designer, these designdocs are great practice, and it's nice to see my ideas recieved well. Some have even been suggesting that I should get into the industry as soon as possible :p.

I'd like to add something about myself:
I didn't grow up with computers and games, they are a recent thing to me, since my family was too poor to afford stuff like that when I was young. Thus I like to think that my ideas aren't influenced by things that have come before, and owe more to my imagination than anything else. So I rather like the compliments you lot have given me. Thank you... and keep the comments coming. :)

All I'm releasing is the back stories you see... I know what makes up a designdoc... the thing is, I'm quite worried about somebody stealing my ideas.... I know it's stupid, and they aren't that good... but I like to keep the contents of them private for now. Sorry.

But thanks for the comment :)

Hiya.

The second one. Def'nately.:bounce:

Edict-launcher. Ouch:eek:

Sounds like it'd be really engrossing. I can imagine it really clearly.

I'd play it.:D

Seeya.

Ill go with the second idea. Sounds best, i donno why :) (maybe im bored with all WW mods)

I love to hear more about the game play, show me the money!

There arent many (or any, ive never seen one) WW 1 mods though. Strange really, since it would suit the whole infantry based action that so many mods are about.
