Certainly better than my reaction would be if I poked a hole in my $139m painting. My reaction would involve a lot more cursing and screaming and breaking things.

I think he said that because it was his OWN painting that he spoilt, imagine if you wrecked someone else's $139 million dollar painting... hence the "thank goodness it was me". I don't think he meant "YEAH I'm a rich fag so I can go around elbowing expensive paintings for fun and no one can stop me".
