We just got breaking news out of Austin Texas, where gunshots have been heard coming from a library at the university of Texas. Reports have indicated that someone brought a gun to the Perry-Castañeda Library at the intersection of East 21st Street and Speedway.

University spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon stated, “The first report I got was that there was an armed suspect in the Perry-Casteneda library. Now I’m told by campus security that the individual has shot himself on the sixth but I’m not there yet so I can’t confirm that.”

A senseless waste no matter the way this may continue to play out. Let's hope it doesn't escalate further.

Suspect had already been confirmed dead around the time you originally posted this. I've been following it on reddit this morning.

Shooter armed with AK47 killed himself on the 6th floor of one of the UT libraries several hours ago. Rumors of a possible second shooter / accomplice are being followed up by police/SWAT.

There's a frontpage thread on reddit about this with tons of UT students posting in it. A couple even claim to have seen a second gunman or have friends who did, but that's hardly reliable.

Glad the dude apparently decided to kill himself rather than take innocent people's lives. I have a grotesque (and you might say morbid) fascination with school shootings but I certainly don't wish for them to happen.

Trivia: one of the worst school massacres in history happened at UT in 1966 when Charles Whitman holed up in a tower on campus with a couple of rifles and began sniping students below; he killed 15 and wounded dozens more.

If only all the other students in the uni had a gun... this never would of happened.
 
Does no-one else think that this could have been hugely worse if everyone had a gun. I mean who would know who was the shooter and who wasn't, maybe everyone would have just started shooting each other.

as opposed to letting nature take it's course when the shooter kills himself after shooting no one but himself

But hey, at least we're giving him the exposure he so obviously wanted.
 
I'm just relieved he decided to just take his life an no-one elses... though its still sad to hear about someone committing suicide
 
GOD DAMMIT PEOPLE STOP KILLING EACH OTHER IN SCHOOLS(and everywhere else). ****ING LEARN SHIT AND DO SOMETHING GOOD WITH YOUR LIFE! Even if it means being a lawful bum.

I graduated from UT Austin in '09. Have a couple of people on facebook still there, but nobody on campus near that library. Just glad to hear that everyone was ok. Kinda sad that the kid really only wanted to kill himself though.


Anyhow, Texas did pass a law in '09 or '10 allowing concealed weapons on campuses. :(


[edit] Oh gosh that came out sounding all wrong :eek:. I meant it was very sad that the kid killed himself, in light of the fact that he very obviously did not intend to hurt anyone else.
 
If only he had learned about Shweeb, he may have had some hope
