Ubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10 released! (linux)

the gnome version of this looks pretty cool, might give it a try since i'm not too pleased with FC4. Been trying to get my wlan card working with ndiswrapper for weeks :(

grawr! its not letting me set up my wireless network...I can see it in the network manager but when I click properties on it, it freezes then it glitches up the whole gnome desktop environment...WTF

I'll download the live cd first, see what its like, but I need to sort out my partitions if i choose to dual boot this and xp

I've never tried SuSE before, just Mandrake 10.1, Madriva 2005LE and FC4 and when I get home, I'll download the live Ubuntu 5.10 cd to give it a try. Hopefully it will have better hardware support compared with what i have tried before.

Yeh that would be great if your willing to lend a hand! Just recently started using linux, and would like to start using it more and get more familiar with it since its excellent to have on your CV, if you are able to say that you are confident in both windows operating systems and versions of linux and unix too. I'm probably just gonna install FC4 again once I get my HD partitions sorted after my sister managed to bugger up all my hard disc partitions and I lost all my music, apps, videos, holiday pics from my digicam etc :(.

Yeh so will just be using ndiswrapper with fc4 and its a linksys wlan card, cant remember the model number off hand, but i have had it workign with knoppix and have heard of other people using it with fc3 and 4.

I've been running the Breezy Badger preview since maybe the day after it was released.

All I have to say is that if Linux had the games... I'd be gone.

So its pretty good then. It is a shame that you can't pick up as many games on linux as you can for windows systems. Just like to ask what the hardware support is like with the breezy badger, just wondering if its gonna like my wlan card..

Try asking on UbuntuForums.org if you don't want to test it with a Live CD.

That's where I go and they usually have the answer. Most of the time I don't even need to ask... it's just there already.

Ok cool thanks for the tip! Will have a look on there

Also, go to www.kernel.org and get the latest kernel sources (full). Looks like it currently stands at 2.6.13.4

Ndiswrapper from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/

Untar it to /usr/src/kernels/2.6.13.4, run make menuconfig (or xconfig if you got that working, which i havent yet) and make sure that Wireless Extensions are enabled, and the 8KB Stack kernel hack is off (i had mine set to enabled by default, and it causes problems apparently)

I'm assuming youv compiled the kernel before, if not just mention, but there are plenty of guides out there to help you. Just make sure you leave a kernel to fall back to incase something doesnt boot (and I've had alot of fun there mate)

Install ndiswrapper when you have conquered the kernel :p

then go to the ndiswrapper directory, put in the driver.inf and driver.sys files (they wont be called driver.xxx obviously). You can try the ones off your network card driver CD, but sometimes they can cause your PC to hang. Download the ones from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...px?Keyword=8180

then in the ndiswrapper directory run
ndiswrapper -i [name-of-driver.inf]

It might say forcing stuff, it should be fine
run ndiswrapper -l to check its loaded

then modprobe ndiswrapper

Then simply run
dhclient
and it should automatically detect your router SSID and channels and stuff, and hopefully get you an IP address if everything worked out fine.

I managed to get my cheap and pathetic Belkin Wireless card working in Fedora Core 4, im sure you can too with your linksys

Took me months and months of trying, I finally got there

I have assumed you know your way around linux, so I was very brief.
My xfire username is bullsquid
feel free to add me with any questions
And join The Linux Hideout for some support, some guys from here are over there.

Hope it helps

Thanks for the info furiousV, much appreciated. Will give this a try once i get it all installed! Thanks again!
