Has anyone met this fighter yet? She's in a ruin called Vindasel outside of the Imperial City and she is the toughest thing I have ever seen!!! I have a level 9 character and she kills me in two hits of her awesome-looking purple glowing sword. She must have to do with a high-level quest because the rest of her cavern was cake, but then she shows up and she is nigh impossibe to kill!!! Anyone else have the pleasure of meeting her? :x

Umbra's in Oblivion? :D

In Morrowind, I always heard how hard fighting Umbra was supposed to be, but when I got to him, my level 45 warrior/uber god of death killed him with Goldbrand in about fifteen seconds. Hopefully he's a little bit tougher this time around.

aparently its a kick ass fighter that killed Victim with two hits and bvasgm killed with a few hits... D:

Um, I guess its a girl, but I was confused for a little while there too. I thought her voice was...indistinct at times.

Having not played Morrowind to the extent most of you folks have, I have never heard of this character and was certainly not level 45 to be able to take her out in a few hits. She'll have to wait down there for the time being. Boy will it be satisfying to get to say, level 45 or so (if that's within the cap), and cleave her asunder with a skillful stroke!

hahaha!
I ran into Umbra about an hour into the game.
Tried to sneak up behind... it... and just got instantly killed.
XD
But I'm almost level 10 now.. so maybe I'll give it another shot. Atlease try to pick his/her pocket.

Level up your major skills, as they will only allow you to get a new level. If, for example, block is not one of your sevel major skills, they constantly blocking will increase your skill in blocking but will not give you points towards a higher level (which allows you to increase intelligence, streght, etc).

In short, try to use your major skills as much as you can.

PS: I haven't gotten to her yet, but I did beat two other soldiers which could kill me in 3-4 hits (each one), but spawning a shitload of monsters around me and letting them fight for me while I hit them with my most powerful fireballs (cost me 4 large magical potions, but they are down and I sold their armours for a good 1500) keeping in mind that my mercantile is not so good (just got it up to level 25)

I was really suprised too when I came across her, she didn't make any hostile moves towards me, but her armor looked nice, so I thought I'd just help myself to it... next thing I know I'm dead on the ground.

"Umbra" is, specifically, the name of the sword held by a terribly powerful warrior whom you met in Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. He states, when you meet him, that he is yearning for a foe who can defeat him in combat, as he is unbested. Instead of telling you his name, he simply says that you should call him by his sword's name. If you defeat him, you get his sword (not to mention armor, etc) as a sort of trophy. It's a nice sword and all, but not the best in all of Morrowind.

In Oblivion, it can only be assumed that the Umbra Sword has fallen into the hands of yet another worthy warrior, this time a female.

Sounds like a reasonable theory ideas_that_verge.

P.S. Sorry, I lied, I'm level 21.

They killed the Nevarine then :( ?

Hm, I was a little confused with level system in Oblivion. Now it seems clearer. Thanks Roland.

I didn't say I was level 45 in Oblivion, I was level 45 in Morrowind when I fought Umbra. Right now, in Oblivion, I'm level 7.

According to the NPCs, the neverine left morrowind. I would too in search of more armor/weapons/etc.

Where exactly is umbra, I couldnt find the place where she is.
Its a ruin called Vindasel south of the Imperial City (across the water). Its right along the road too I think so its fairly visible.

What I want to know is: Is Umbra levelled to something like 5 or 10 above yours all the time or some such? Can she be killed before you do one of the quests that involves her?

Ugh...tried it again and got wasted. Need to get my summon monster on and see what happens. :p

I referenced this character a second ago in another thread. I must have put the wrong location in the other thread. She could one hit me if I didn't block her attack. Vicious bitch I tell you. After about ten tries I decided I'll come back for revenge one day.

Is she for sure part of a quest? Hopefully it's a fighter guild quest, my poor mage was out of his league.

Hahaha! Yeah, I know! Even blocking she could kill me in 2 or 3 hits! I even went back with my level 14 character and she still pwned me! Lousy whore. Hopefully at level 20 or so with a summoned Dremora she will fall to me and I will get that crazy powerful blade!!

My friend told me she was part of a quest and you can get her sword or some crummy mask, depending on how you handle it. Can't remember if he ever said what group the quest was for though....

LOL, I had a scroll from someplace or another that let me call a huge beast that looked like a mini rancor. It took over 400 magicka to use and I forgot the name of the creature. I thought "this will help me beat her." I cast the spell. She runs up to the creature one hits it then comes running at me and one hits me. "Oh sh!t!!" I thought to myself as I got flung across the dungeon dead.

You mean this stuff? :p

Still very hard to kill her, even with the difficulty right down (lowered it after failing a few times :D)

Im level 6 by the way.

DAMN!!!! Good job Timmyy. Good to know that she can go down. Did you do this for a quest? That sword is sick. As a mage that puppy would seriously come in handy. Dumb question, I know, is that armor Heavy armor?

Ack! You beautiful b4st4rd! Nice work! I feel like a pansy turning down the difficulty but it just might be worth it in this case!

That stuff isn't even all that heavy! Funny that armor isn't magical at all though. Might have to change that once I get it. :)

Level 6 huh? I wonder if any of it gets levelled since I am 8 levels up or so? Anyone have an answer to that one? Imagine even better stats on those crazy treasures!!

Where you find her?
At the bottom of a ruin called Vindasel southwest of the Imperial City. Beware fighting her straight-up though. She pwns!

Of course...I JUST BEAT HER!!! Hahaha! It was so simple that I totally missed it for ages! I just...

***SPOLIER***
jumped onto a pillar and shot her with a goblin staff of shock that I have had for a while--20 dmg each time and it still took like 15+ shots!
***SPOILER***

Anyway, I use light armor and can't use hers, but the sword, Umbra, is the sh1t! Good luck everyone else!

I stumbled across that ruin today and I'm glad I did. Umbra was a bitch to fight indeed! I think she disintegrated two of my weapons in the fight. I don't think she disarmed me, because I couldn't find my weapons after the fight. After getting thrown around the room for a few minutes I finally killed her and took the weapons and armor. The sword is really powerful, but it doesn't look all that cool. I'm lvl 19 and it currently does 21 damage which is the highest I've seen so far, higher than my Glass two-handed sword.

Did you know that umbra is a physics term for the dark part of the shadow under an object when it is being illuminated by two light sources? :dork:
well now you know.

*leaves thread*

Followed directions to get to this place and took her down in a short fight. She wasn't tough but then again I'm level 28. Umbra is the highest dmg sword I've seen yet. The ability is nice for filling up soul gems but overall with the fire damage my other daedric sword does more.

The sword

It looks sexy :D

I just noticed it weighs 0. Interesting. You do realize that it means more than not taking up any inventory space?

Heh, how could I miss that?

Gotta be some kind of quest :D

Once you get it you also get a journal entry that mentions it in the Clavicus Vile quest even if you know nothing about it yet (which I don't, other than a shrine I wandered by but my level 17 character was too weak to partake--they wouldn't let me!).

It must be levelled too because at 100% it only does 21 dmg for me and my character is level 18 now. Hopefully it will get more powerful as I do--does that happen or do all the items stay as powerful as they were when you got them?

The dmg rating goes up with your weapon skill. So as your blades skill goes higher and higher the dmg rating will creep up too. This is as high as I've seen on a weapon and I have my blades skill topped out.

EDIT: I didn't get a journal entry about the sword or anything.

That is good to know. Thanks!

Hmm, that's odd...maybe if you go to the shrine (dunno where the heck it was) because that gives you the first entry for the quest, but I didn't think you needed to because after you picked up the sword it should have popped up a message saying something to the effect of "You have found the sword" as if it were a quest item, which it is. Weird....

I suppose it could be quest related - however that's not what I was referring to.

*cough* fatigue *cough*

Oh :p I was thinking deeper than that but yea, this thing is much nicer to swing around than a 40 weight item although being a pure fighter I have tons of endurance. For those non-fighters out there it's a good one too simply because they might not have a lot of fatigue.
