If the SDK for mod makers is to come before the game, wouldn't that mean it would get released at least a month before...or no?

I hope it goes gold this week.... although I know gabes never said anything other than sept 30th, all this talk about nov, feb is unsettling.

There are a few chosen ones who have received the SDK, but if HL2 doesn't go gold this week I can't see how they could possibly keep a Sept 30th release date.

Why can't Gabe or someone from Valve just come out and say it has or has not been delayed to all the gaming sites??

Because then, if the game is delayed, you can't blame valve for promising what will the release date be.

yes many modmakers already have the SDK

because if it hasn't been delayed then there's nothing to announce.

thats an excuse...

I thought gabe had already said many time's it has not been delayed.. and if he has not said it directly i know many other valve employees have.

Oh for God's sake. Too many people are far too worked up about this. Either:
a) It's delayed and they will make an announcement within the next fortnight. However if they only said anything so close to the release date that would suggest, to my mind, that the delay isn't going to be too bad.
b) It'll go gold any day now and they'll set all our minds at ease by saying so.
c) They'll be deviously secretive and not mention anything when the game goes gold (about now-ish) which would be in keeping with the development process of HL2.
I'm sure there's a "d" but I can't think of it just yet.

d) Steelhed is right and the game is going to be delayed until March 2004 and Valve have known this for some time.

Valve seem to like surprises. They may just keep it secret that it has gone gold. Anyone who says "Yeah, but it would be leaked they can't keep something like that secret!" has to remember that if I told you in March that Valve had been working on Half-Life 2 for 4 years, they were just keeping it secret you'd have said "That's stupid, how could they keep it secret? Someone would've leaked it."

Actually only a few chosen mod makers have the SDK already in use. Only tricky thing is: these mod makers are working for and are getting paid by Valve and their mods will only be available through steam and you have to pay for these mods (or you should choose the monthly subscription thingy). Therefor they aren't really modmakers but merely "expansion developers"...

There will be however an all open release of the SDK just before the release of HL2. So if the SDK will come in the next couple of weeks then we know for sure HL2 will hit the stores soon, but if we do not see the SDK, then HL2 will take even longer.

I remember hearing quite a few whispers here and there during the gap between now and then (if you see what I mean). Stuff that proved to be remarkably accurate: Gordon would have a female side-kick, Valve had been interested in facial expressions research by a Dr. <I forget what his name is>
But hey, there was also a load of crap going around - and there's even more going around now it's been confirmed - but I really like the idea of them keeping it deadly secret, saying nada and then it simply being in shops on the 30th, with no fanfare but a simple: "Why would we make a big deal? It's there just like we said it would be..."
Plus that Alcatraz press event... Hmmmm.
