"Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit"

I get this when I try to start the game. I know for a fact that theres nothing wrong with my DVD-ROM, and the disc looks perfect, so what can it be? Anyone else experienced this?

Yep retail copy here too. I want an explanation. Guy from valve on here emailed me saying I should try renaming the source engine.gcf file. Not sure where I should do this but more to the point not sure why I should.

Well, I've got the same problem. Worst of all, I got HL2 running, but can't get it back up...
I also got the retail copy.

I'ld like to know more about renaming that sourceenige.cfg, maybe try that.

I don't know if i matters, but I'm using a Plextor dvd 712-a, and it's kinda bugging when i try to launch HL2 a couple of times, maybe there a problem with that version or smthing.

Hope we all find help soon, cuz no HL2 and no CS:S makes Opper a dull boy :)

bah! *cries* I have the same problem. I just dont know whats wrong :S I mean.. the game installed just fine. But cant run it ?!

I also have the retail copy. And there is nothing wrong with my DVD-ROM.

try uninstalling (not disabling) alcohol 120 or whatever virtual cd-rom/dvd-rom app you are using to mount images; I have had the same problem with several recent games and found that to be the source of the problem. Dont have HL2 yet so who knows, but it's worth a try.

I uninstalled daemon tools, removed HL2, reinstalled it..
And it didn't work, too bad, but thx for the info ;)

Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% doesn't make any problems like that. Only it could be is CloneCD. But this seems to happen if u have a drive that has problems with copy protections (mostly Securom).
My drive get that error on ANY game that uses the Securom protection

I too have the Plextor 712 A. Perhaps it's as Dreamhacker says. Would like to have it verified though before I get a new DVD-ROM...

Samething is happening with me. I can't stand this shit anymore!

too bad that doesnt work (the virtual drive thing..).. Doom3 has a documented issue with those apps, specifically alcohol.. Cant those of you who purchased the dvd just download the gave via steam? I know its a BIG and painfully slow download, but at least a temp workaround..

Download the game through Steam? I really don't think that will work unless you bought a bronze, silver or gold package.

Okay, I found a solution to the problem, well it works for me anyway.
I've done about everything I could think off (reinstall, reboot, delete daemon tools...)

Howere none of those really made it work, but this did work:
I started by taking the dvd out of the drive
then i started HL2 (cs:s) en after "preparing to launch..." you get an other window with "no disc inserted"
DON'T CLICK ON ANYTHING at this point,
just put your dvd back in the drive, and let it run the autolaunch
NOW very important, when the dvd is launching (when you hear it's reading from your dvd) the autolaunch window, THEN you click on the "retry" botton on the "no disc inserted" window.

This should make HL2 or cs:s start immediatly, well it did for me, guess you need a bit of luck with the timing. I think this way, HL2 recognises your dvd-drive, which it otherwise doesn't.

Hope this helps you guys a bit, until there's a more "professional" solution to our problem

I'm trying this out as I type thanks for the help man!

Did that crap work for anyone? It sure didnt work for me.

steam download

btw the concept of downloading from steam was based on this; if you own half life, you can install steam on a new pc, and register games you already own; this allows you to download hl1 without actually having the cd.. i guess i assumed valve would do the same thing with hl2?

Same Problem here with the german retail-version and dvd-drives from Philips...

Same thing

I also see this. Retail Collector's Edition DVD, with Plextor PX-320A. I saw this several times after installing.. then somehow got in and was playing for awhile. Then decided to get out and try CS: Source. No dice there after many tries. Now cannot get back into HL2 either. Anyone know their official support page? Their awesome "manual" does not have anything.

Ok I found the support page at vugames.com. No mention of this problem in their knowledge database so I sent a web form about it. I suggest for all of you to do the same so they understand many people are seeing this.

Sent an extensive description of the problem to their support last night. They probably have a lot to deal with, so the reply might take some time in coming...

I too am having this problem with a week-old Plextor 712A :flame:
Game installs fine, but when it comes to loading up, it just sounds like the CD is trying to spool-up... but then doesn't, repeatedly makes a weird noise and then comes up with the unable to authenticate original disc within time limit message...

Re-installed, updated firmware etc - nothing makes any difference.

UK retail copy...
Argh!

I had the same problem. The way I make it work is:

1. Logg in to steam.
2. Start HL2 using the shortcut on the deskop.
3. When a green window appears that says "Starting half-life 2" (or something like that. When it shows put in the cd.
4. PLAY! :p

It works for me =)
ok ok.. sry for my bad english :p

wierd I have a plextor 712-A, still have the same problem. Spoke to a valve guy last night he seemed non plussed and hasn't replied to any of my recent emails.

I experienced the exact same problems with my Plextor 712-a - tried everything - in the end i had to take out a 3-yr old DVD drive from an old machine and install it into my current set-up. Works a treat now.
Guess the game just doesn't like the Plextor drive. Maybe it could be because it's a burner. My old DVD is read-only. Just a thought.

It's not the drive though that is at fault IMHO it's the game that has not been tested fully.

Is there any way valve could solve this problem with a patch.

Nu-Tech DDW-081/082 doesn't work

hi,

hl2 gives me the same message using my NU-Tech DDW-081
drive.

Version : Europe/Germany DVD

so there seems to be a problem with dvd writers ?
i don't have any other drive - so when will we see a PATCH ?

A lot of the DVD-writers on the market (indeed, the plextor 712-a got several bad reviews because of this) have major trouble reading the newest securom and safedisc releases. My bet is that Half-Life is using one of these two copy protection technologies, and that's where the problem is.

If this is indeed the case, you either need to wait for a firmware upgrade that specifically fixes these problems, fiddle with it until it boots properly (you will need to fiddle every time), or supplement your existing DVD-RW with a run-of-the-mill DVD-ROM. You may want to contact your DVD drive manufacturer about this problem.

I have just called plextor. Some Belgian guy didn't speak English too well so I've sent their technical support an email and hope they are aware of this problem (big problem) and have a solution. Anyone still getting this warning??

Same problem two different games

Yes I have same problems with Plextor-712a, can not play hl2 and Tribes Vengeance, it is so beautiful, they got my money I got nothing at all.

Me too, I also have a Plextor 712a, Valve said to update firmware, I did v1.05. No differance. I have retail copy, don't have Daemon tools or Alcohol. Removed CloneCD. No virtuail drives. That Plextor was supposed to be one of the best drives around, thats why I got it instead of a dual layer burner and it has been. I think valve has gone overboard on their "copy protection" bovine poopie!
Any solutions out there?

Actualy the plextor 712 got some bad reviews because it has trouble reading the latest games with securom (and safedisc) protections.

But anyway I also updated my firmware to v1.05, removed Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120 (don't have blindwrite or clonecd) even updated Windows and still no prevail. Getting pretty tired of this shit ...
