Hi all, I've been trying to work around this problem for a while, and I've asked many sources all who haven't been able to solve, so I thought I'd my luck here.
I downloaded a file off Kazaa (don't ask :dozey: ) which I can't delete. I also can't rename it or move it, and when I try and look at the properties, it says: 'The properties for this item are unavaliable'. It is a .bmp file which is 20.0kb. The folder the file is in can be moved with the file in it, but the folder cannot be moved onto a floppy or into the recycle bin. I tried deleting it in command prompt (I'm on win2k and there is no DOS as some people suggested), which didn't work. It has an insanely long file name by the way with lots of words and space etc. I tried use task manager to shut down explorer and then run a new task and delete the file from there, that didn't work either. I've virus checked my hdd numerous times and that folder in particular. I'm really at a loss of what to do, and formatting the hard drive isn't really an option. ANY help will be most appreciated, cheers!

Yes ive had that problem before with a 20kb file from Kazaa...

Although for me I was able to delete it through command prompt.

There are special programs for permanently deleting stuff from your hard drive which I suspect would work. Although I havn't tried any of them myself so I don't know of any to recommend.

This is just a random one I found, no idea what its like.

What probibly happened was that the name of the file contains an ASCII character that windows does not recognize, therefore it will not allow you to delete it. If you knew what the character was you could (if you had it) go into DOS and delete it because DOS unlike Windows understands ASCII.

This prank was used by me often to put icons on friend's/teacher's desktops saying such things as "GAY PORN.jpg". They couldent delete it.

Haha. How do you do it?

Sounds like you can't delete it because you can't properly refer to it. if the file name is
"dsjaf;unf;asounfl;s..........nfl;asnf;osanf;osain.bmp"

DEL *.bmp
or
DEL *.* (and wipe the directory clean)

That should get around any funky naming chaaracter.
You could also reboot and hit F8 and come to a simple command prompt (no windows) and try the same.
