Hey all,

So my university results are out and I bagged myself First Class Honors (the best you can get)! :D

I'm so ecstatic at the moment, I can't believe I actually made it through uni, let alone getting top marks! :D

So I now have First Class Honors in Computer Games Design, partly thanks to you guys who helped out with the testing of my level for my final year project a few months back! http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=168313

I'm so happy! :D

So have the rest of you guys got your results yet? What did you get?

Good luck all! :D

Edit: For those of you who are interested you can read my dissertation here: http://beckshaw.netau.net/files/Beck_Shaw-Dissertation.pdf

I got a first for this. Its just over 20,000 words. Thanks for the help! :D

I came out of my Creative and Professional Writing course with a high 2:1!

Almost all my modules were 1 or 2 marks off a first. Grats on your first though Ren! Woo!

Nice one, Dek! :D

No probs, Shaker. :) Let me know what you think of it :)

We should point out for peeps who don't know, that the UK grading system goes like this:

69%+ = First
59%-68% = 2:1
49%-58% = 2:2
39%-40% = Third
38%- = Fail

We should point out for peeps who don't know, that the UK grading system goes like this:

Whoa, 38% or less is a fail? Are they really harsh with marking or just very lenient about failing?

40% or less is fail at my uni. I think thats a fair amount really!

...wait, what. What are these percentages calculated from?

Under a D (65%) is a failure in the US, and most major classes require at least a C (75%).

Grades must be calculated differently there.

hl2.net made it to the acknowledgments! See, it is better here.

Also, I was reading your project and I thought Prey did have multiplayer?

It appears it does have MP! Completely overlooked that! Watching a video of it, doesn't seem to be implemented well though. In terms of level design I mean.

And yep, hl2.net is acknowledged :) Only fair after the help you guys gave me. :)

Niiiice, Ren! I don't know when my results come out but it's soon. I'm scared. I could get anything from a high 2:2 to a low 1st. A high 2:1 is most likely.

Yuri, it must be graded differently because I know that at my university 70% is extremely difficult to achieve and no tutor or grad student I've talked to has ever heard of anyone getting over 80. I'm not quite sure why it works like that. For dissertations and the like, 90+ is of publishable quality, and 80+ publishable with a little work.

Thanks, Sulk :D

Check your faculties website? They published our results there. I should be getting more detailed results in the mail soon :)

Good luck, Sulk :D

I get my results on Monday.

Grades at my university are:

0% - 50%: failed
50% - 68%: passed
68% - 77%: passed cum laude
77% - 85%: passed magna cum laude
85% - 90%: passed summa cum laude
90% - 100%: passed egregia cum laude

Smashed all my exams and ended up correcting my teacher on the Yamaha O2R Desk Prac Exam

"It seems you passed but I failed, Dan."

Got two weeks off before the next trimester starts with Electronic Music, Live Sound, C20-something Studio etc.

Nice one, Dan :D

Good luck, Insano, let us know what you get! :D

Luckily I didn't have any exams, except for one in the first year, which was open book and we were allowed to use the internet :p

it's only my second year but I managed to get a 2:1 which means I shall be allowed to stay on for my masters degree in Civil Engineering.

tbh I'd much rather exams over assessments.

You can leave studying till the last few days, but you can't do so with assessment. D:

Whoa, cool dissertation. That looks like it would've been fun to write. I like all the pictures too, haha.

I also noticed you had a Gantt chart in there. My least favorite type of chart.

That's so weird, but it must simply be a different scale. I assume this works with dissertations, which would be easy to scale however you'd like, but what about math and science classes and tests? It's fairly common here to have, say, a 50 question math final where each question is 2 points... and our scale is applied.

It is also bizarre to me that 50% would be considered good, it is as if the best students know at most 70% of the material o_0

ANYWAY

Congratulations on your grades, even though they would suck over here! :p

It's a very different scale, based on the suitibility of the work for academic publication.

I got an 86 once, but got marked down the 80 by an external examiner.. 76 in my dissy tho :D woop

Got a VG on my last course, and G on the one before (we study 2-4 courses each semester, and never parallel).

0-50% = U (failed)
50-75% = G (passed)
75-100% = VG (passed with distinction)

Congrats BTW, Ren.

I got a first too, and a scholarship to do 6 weeks' work with the astrophysics department. I'm hugely surprised with myself.

Congrats man, maybe you'll end up walking the halls of Valve one day!

I tell you what, I'd love to start a course in game design, or anything to with gaming and journalism.

Working for a company like IGN would be SO awesome.

I think now that gaming is becoming bigger than films, saying you have a job in gaming isnt so nerdy any more. Games are turning into films these days with competitive story telling and design. Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain etc etc.

The industry is just getting better and better. My cousin is doing gaming design at the moment, he's in his 4th year, and he's partly doing it because he knows gaming will never die out. Its one of those industries you just know is worth while getting into and investing in for the future.

Grats man.

It was really fun to write! Had a military advisor too, he was really interesting to talk to!

I hate Gantt charts too. Bane of my life. Thankfully my supervisor didn't want one every week or something lol, just one at the beginning and an actual one at the end. :)

Congratulations on your grades, even though they would suck over here! :p

Thanks :D

Nice one :D

Highest I got was a 97 for a design document.

Congrats BTW, Ren.

Thanks :D

Well done! I've really surprised myself too. I can't stop smiling about it :D

Thank you :D And I'd love to work for Valve! That'd be a dream come true.

Any Valve members lurking around these forums, I want a job :D

I got a two one (second class honour, first grade) in my second-year physics exams. That's the second best. I got a work placement scholarship for the summer in the physics department.

You just had to go one step too far, didn't you...
