Unlocking FPS and other optimization tips

Ok, I know there is a thread about how to unlock the FPS, since it seems some people have the FPS locked at 30. I seem to be one of em.

The problem is, I cannot find the thread. Last 20 min I spent looking for it, and trying to find some tips on google... no dice.

So can someone tell me how I can unlock my FPS. The closest I got was finding a command to show FPS, heh. Anyways, Thanks.

Well, the old Half-Life engine came at a 72fps lock default, the engine maxxed out at 100fps. I would always just type fps_max 100 in console to cap it out at 100.

Err sorry, I usually type 105 for good measure

So the magic command you're looking for is fps_max

I'm not sure what the new Source engine in Half-Life 2 gets maxxed at, but you could try at least "fps_max 100" in the console for better results, minus the quotes for higher frames per second. You can probably go higher, as games like Quake3 go 500+ though once you hit 100-120+ I personally don't notice much difference.

I don't think it's possible to notice anything above 70.

(Mine's capped at 60 btw - a stable frame rate is as important as a high one )

Optimization would be nice, as my FPS is dreadful. And I'm not on a bad system either.
