Unlocking Games Files?

I did a search and couldn't find anything on this, so I decided to post a thread. If this has already been addressed, feel free to close it.

Any way, I started up Steam and was greeted by a loading bar that said "Unlocking Game Files" or something like that. At first I was confused.

And then it dawned on me. Was this sweet game of godly goldness unlocked on my PC? My mind tried to coax me with rational thought. "No, no, Absinthe. The release date is in November. This is October..." but I frantically double-licked the HL2 icon after the loading bar completed. When I clicked on it, it showed me another progress bar and it showed HL2 updating once more. The update was small, and took only a minute to finish.

When it did finish, I sat there nervously, waiting for something to happen. I double-clicked the HL2 icon again, but to my dismay, it was still apparently locked.

So... Can anybody tell me WTF just happened there?

We're not quite sure exactly why it says that, but it's just a regular update, nothing exciting. There have been lots of threads on this which have more info

It has to do this to update CS: Source.

Hmm... Okay then. My mistake. This topic can be done away with if that's the case.

In order to update CS:S, some of the shared content must be unlocked and changed, because I imagine some of the stuff was an engine fix, not just a CS:S fix.

There are atleast 15 topics about this in the last week, you need to search better.

although this has been discussed quite a bit before (it happens to people randomly, as well as the "validating" files)
It seems to unlock hl2 files while loading content (probably making changes to source files)
if you double click the hl2 icon in steam while it is unlocking you will notice that it says "pre-loading" and a progress bar.
(also it seems to be trickling dod:s and cs:s content)

One question, when this process goes into unlocking ther shared files has anyone tried taking a look at those unlocked files? It seems like a risky way to do things, though I'm sure Valve has thought of that.

this is a good point when there unlocked during update is it possible to extract the gcfs unencrypted or play unlocked?

I tried the words "Unlocking" "Game Files" "HL2 Files" "Unlocked" "Steam", variations of their orders, and a few others I can't remember.

My mistake if that wasn't the correct Search critera required. Perhaps next time I should include the word "pony" as well.

Don't worry about them Absinthe. It's life shattering if someone steps even marginally out of line in their little pseudo-community. I'm gonna' go head out into the outside world. If I slip over the speed limit I'll relish the fact that 24 morons won't be there to write unintelligible commentaries on my actions.
