Epic's VP announces Unreal 4 to the world

"Not content with ruling the next gen with its all conquering Unreal 3 engine - which has been licensed by Microsoft for the 360, Sony for the PS3 and just about every serious next gen PC developer worth their salt - Epic Games has already begun the march to global hegemony in the next next generation, with work on the previously unheard of Unreal Engine 4, now revealed to have begun over two years ago."

""People don't realise this but we're already two years into development of Unreal Engine 4. It certainly doesn't have a full team yet, it's just one guy and you can probably guess who that guy is. [Well we'd hazard a fair old guess it's Tim Sweeney]. "

if unreal 4 engine is anything like the leap in visuals from u2 and u3 it'll be stunning indeed. what do you think the new unreal engine will bring?

well wow, that will be amazing i figure, though with only one gusy workin on it, could take a while :E

when is the first Unreal 3 Engine game coming out?

I think with the xbox360 ...just a guess though

I don't think it was necessary to release that info, too early.

ULTRA MEGA SUPER TRIPLE QUADRO REALISM!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111...
Is what it will bring, probably.

We probably won't be seeing anything until early 2007. :dozey: Why even release the info this early? At least release your first game using the UE3 before you start talking about the next engine. Sheesh!

UE3 SUCKS

Give me UE4 over that piece of shit.
I agree, Unreal Engine 3.0 sucks -compared to Unreal Engine 4!
Unreal Engine 3.0 looks amazing right now, I can't wait to see the new one. I wonder if we'll be able to see it anytime soon, hopefully this generation.

Now they are just making me want to bust into their office and steal all the pc's.

I havnt even played any Engine 3 games yet I dont need to know about 4 yet....but at the same time its nice to know its in the works already.

Heh, I live close enough to drive to Epic's offices... Mabye I should stop by and say hello ;)

"In the works" can mean "We sat around, ate pizza while drunk and found a way to jam more pixels on the screen"

Must be rather cool to wrap one's head around specs and limitations for ue4 though. I wonder what sort of system they have in mind for an average ue4 user.

I bet they said this just to generate hype for the Unreal 3 engine.
Well its not working- now I just want Unreal Engine 4. :(

It's all just generating hype right now...

They don't even know what will be in UE4... They are experimenting with different methods, doing R&D, studying hardware market (to find their target audience), more R&D, looking at new graphics techniques, see what people expect nowadays, and see the feedback from UE3 from devs and soon-to-be-customers...

It's just Tim Sweeney studying things and checking them out... No reason to get excited.

Usually you never know when the engine is in the works (this has been in dev for 2 years they said....), which is best...

Well, here's to GDC 2008 :D

Well at least we know it'll come out before Duke Nukem Forever.

OH SNAP BURN.

In all honesty, I wouldn't doubt it if they announce they were going to switch to UE4 :p

I love these little scenes you seem to do more and more lately.

Kickass Info!

News like this just makes me wait for one more thing, which is good.

lol Raziel you probably won't even see screenshots of UE4 until like 2007 (after UE3 products start to get onto the market in like 2005/2006). I mean you get companies that spend sooo much money on UE3, only to get a new engine released the following year that is 10x better? That would be suicide for Epic as so many people would be pissed at them (I'm talking about the perspective as a developer... customers would love the advance in computer graphics :p )

So don't wait for it, as it will take like 2-3 years until you see it :p That's just my guess though.

BURN!!! oh you already said burn. Oh well. Take that 3DRealms!
What a publicity stunt. I thought Epic was above that. Anyway, features in UE4?

I think the next step could be real-time radiosity. We've got one-bounce lighting covered pretty well now, even sub-surface scattering and transfer. But I want to shine light on a blue object and see the white wall next to me turn blue-ish. Or have a dark room become dimly lit because the hallway light is on. That's a feature I'd like to see.

Or we could get shadow penumbras. No more stencils like Doom 3. In other words, area lighting. That would really be awesome!

In 3 years time graphics will look better than thy do today!

Woohoo ;)

UE4 will feature everything UE3 has... except all the textures you lay down will be naked cliffyB pictures

Half-life 3 in the works..yes 3. Then 4 and 5 and 6 etc. etc. etc.

Do I see a pattern to these things or is it just me?

Mutoid: I think the word you are looking for is real-time dynamic penumbra shadows ;) Source has the penumbra, but it's not calculated in real-time.

HDR will provide radiosity (in the chapel, the sunlight shines through the colored glass, which makes the wall behind it those different colors). UE3 has this feature as well (not sure if it's calculated real-time or not though)

We won't know about features for a long long time... They don't even know what's going to work in the next-gen, they are simply trying out some ideas... Nothing to be too excited about (though I do wonder what Tim Sweeney thinks the "next big thing" is :) )

Ok, give me unreal 3, with red faction style damage on levels(more realistic obviously), and maybe some character damage like Soldier of Fortune(but again more realistic). Make everyone destructable!

Then just make a really fun set of Tactical Modern Combat, World War I & II, Medival mods to go along with the game, and thats fine by me.

That would be so sweet...just make sure its very realistic, no glossy terrain etc.. I want hardcore poly count!

Dont pull a Doom3 and make 10 poly characters, and then map them to death.

unreal4 engine will be nice. but unreal5 engine is what im waiting for. its gonna be OMG

Well, for sure I meant real-time, but really? I haven't seen it in Source. Unless you're talking about how they soften the edges of the shadows and stuff, or shade the maps upon compile.

Well, the radiosity I was referring to is the light bouncing off opaque surfaces (like I was describing earlier), where a wall that isn't directly lit by a light source receives light from a surface that is. Look at classic raytraced CGI shots where radiosity is calculated if you don't know what I mean. As far as I know, no engine has attempted that yet. I could be wrong, though.

Yea, when people refer to soft-shadows they mean the penumbra (though a lot of the times, it's just a faked penumbra where it simply takes the darkness of the umbra, and fade to 0)...

http://www.halflife2.net/screenshots/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=2

Look on the walls, you can see the fading, which is the penumbra.

Real-time radiosity isn't in any games (you can download test apps though), though radiosity is calculated when you compile I believe for Source...
