Unreal Tournament 2004 is going to have real-time shadow system, Where is HL2?

Source supports dynamic lighting.. it's just not used for HL2

It doesnt say anything about HL2 on that site.

i was under the impression that it was already out.......what am i missing?

no no, it's alright, it was an easy mistake to make.. :)

so is it an update or a mod that's gonna give ut04 dynamic lighting? judgeing by the site it's seems to be a mod or something.....i'm confused

argh you people dont understand how much real-time shadows mean to me :( :( :(

Dynamic lighting and dynamic shadows are two different things. HL1 had dynamic lighting.

I think people gotta stop worrying about HL2's graphics. The game will be the best ever made, real time shadows or not. Besides it's graphics are clearly some of the best we've ever seen, real time shadows or not. No one can deny that one of HL2's strengths is it's graphics

I meant dynamic lighting/shadows

[n00b]wait, now I've confused myself.. aahhh.. what's the point of dynamic lighting without dynamic shadows?[/n00b]

Edit: I can see how dynamic lighting would look better than pre-calculated lightmaps, but how does dynamic lighting really look any better? I always thought the two went hand in hand.. am I wrong?

I don't think so. I'm 99.99999999% sure HL used light maps. Light maps are pre-calculated and they allow for soft shadows since they are pre-rendered.

Dynamic lighting is calculated real-time.

Guys. Think baout the thread and link before posting :p

Anyway, general lighting for hl2 is pre-rendered lightmaps. It does support real time shdowing and lighting (though probably not as effecitnly as, say, d3)

AFAIK, the real time lighting and what not, cna be seen with gun flashes and stuff.

Wow, kewl, neverwinter nights has realtime lighting, too :p

I agree with you on the graphics issue, but no one knows how good HL2 will be.

That's true I guess, I mean it can't be garaunteed that it's an awseome game yet...But even so, if anyone can remember back to Half-Life 1, it's graphics weren't exactly mindblowing for back then when it was released. Compared to HL1 when that was released, HL2 for it's time will be faaaar more superior for it's time graphics wise than HL1 was. So everyone should quit whinging.

unreal SUCKS It will never be as good as Half-Life 2 period.

dynamic lighting is gunfire/explosions lighting up objects around them.
dynamc shadows are shadows that react to light sources/explosions, etc.

so...
yea....

Pre-calculated lighting is almost always much much higher quality (since it includes things like radiosity calculations), it's just less realistic when lightsources are moved or blocked.

Real-time shadowing/direct lighting is not a HARD thing to do at all: it's a brute force method. It's something that, like this UT guy, you can pretty easily mod in. The real problem is the performance hit and fitting it into the game design.

I HAVE A BRILLIANT IDEA!!! LET'S WAIT UNTILTHE ****ING GAME IS OUT (HL2 FOR ANY IDIOT NOT KNOWING WHAT GAME!) AND THEN WE CAN START RIPPING IT APART!!! AND WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE;
1. IT IS A ****ING GAME!!!
2. REFER TO #1
3. IF YO THINK YOU CAN DO BETTER GO DEVELOP A GAME ENGINE FOR 5 YEARS AND THEN LET US ****ING PICK OUT AND EXPLODED TO HUGE DISTEND PROPORTIONS EVERY STUPID LITTLE ERROR, BUG, AND/OR FEATURE.

JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE!!! WAIT UNTIL THE GAME IS OUT, GO WATCH THE NEW CS:S VIDEOS UNTIL YOU BLEED OUT OF YOUR EYE SOCKETS, JUST WAIT UNTI THE ACTUAL GAME IS RELEASED BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND MAKE YOURSELF LOOK LIKE A HUGE ****TARD!

Go hl2!

IN ADDITION, THE THREADS ABOUT CS:S HDR, YES THAT IS HDR IN THE BUILDING SCENE, NO IT IS NOT DUST (NEED A RENDERFARM TO SIMULATE TO THE DEGREE SHOWN) NOR VOLUMETRIC, IT IS SIMPLY HDRI WITH A NIFTY LIGHT BLOOM, EXSPOSURE/LIGHT BLUR EFFECT. SO CALM DOWN.

AND ONCE AGAIN, WAIT FOR THE GAME!!!

wow! that guy is pissed. I'm sure you can get your point across without using caps like that. It makes me feel a queezy when I'm struck with type like that.

I'm with you
Who woulda known that people would be discussing HL2 on a HL2 sit, man. Its disgusting if you ask me And they forced you to read this thread and get annoyed by it.

I suggest you not come here if you find discussing lighting features in HL2 annoying, cause it only gets worse from here.

well, ok, he went a bit insane. But I can't really blame him, my head screams this kind of thing ever day, and I try my best to remain calm and make intelligent points.

But sometimes people are so stupid they don't understand intelligent points, and you just want to put your hands through the monitor and rip their head off..

Anywwhhhooooss, I'm glad he vented his fury, it made me feel a little better.

I feel the same way, but its expected when valve isn't releasing any info. When it gets to the point where you can't take one more thread about Gordon's eyeglass perscripton is etc, then just type www.<insertotherwebsitehere>.com and go there. :)

I tried that, but I got a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" :(

If one person doesn't realise that the above is not true I will lose all hope in humanity and go *CRAZY INSANE*.

I made sure it was a trojin infested goatse site :naughty:
Try again!
