Unsupported VGA mode (easy fix i would think)

Ok, i have the stupidest problem in the world. Im playing HL2, and everything is fine. went thru registration blah blah. Im walking along and think to myself "MAybe it would run a bit smoother if i lowered my resolution." Big mistake. I acidentally lowered it from 800x600 to 720x526.

My computer doesnt support 720x526.

Now, everytime i start up HL i egt the sounds and everyhting, but my screen is black and says "unsupported VGA mode" or somehting along those lines. I cant change the games resolution, because the screen is blank. Ive reinstalled this thing (along with steam, complete uninstall everytime) 3 times now. No luck.

So, the point of my rambling is, Does anyone know where i can adjust my resoulution outside the game? I need it back at 800x600 but i cant find a way to do it. If someone helps me they can have my first born

It's in the registry.

You'll have to go to HKCU -> Software -> Valve -> Source -> HL2 -> Settings
There is a width and a height. (Try 640 for width and 480 for height. You can then change it to whatever in the game.)

ive done this, but trying 1600*1200 or whatever
easy fix run -> regedit then find valve/HL2
then edit the key for "height" and "width" ie height = 600 width = 800

Find "height" and "width" and adjust them to suit you, 800*600 or whatever you want.

wow if this works... thats awesome. im guessing this probably won't help my issues with not being able to use a higher res?

mine goes hkey -> software -> valve -> then the only choices are half life 2 and steam. Why am i such a dumbass and cant figure this out? it seems so easy!
EDIT: nvm, seems to work now. lemme see if this shit works.

Another easy solution is simply to edit the launch options of hl2:

-gl -w 800
