Updating Half Life 2 (Patches) and Steam...

I heard that Valve released a patch to fix the stuttering problem that people encoutered... but I don't know whether I have it or not. I also heard that Steam automatically updates and downloads the patches for you... but I haven't noticed any such thing.. nor have I noticed the stuttering problem actually being fixed in-game. How do I find it if the patch has been downloaded, or how do I make Steam download the patch? Is there a way to manually install the patch? Thanks.

If you restart steam while having the game set as "Update automatically" then it will update after you restarted.

Also if it's not to "Update automatically" then it will download it when you start the game.

How do I set it to update automatically?

THis is set separeately for each game in Steam. To set it (and it may be already set this way), open Steam, and go to Play Games. In the Play Games list, right click on Half Life 2, and choose properties. You should have a check box for "always keep this game updated" or something like that (I can't check because I am not at home). IF it is checked, then Steam looks for updates for the game each time you restart Steam, then downloads and applies them automatically. A much better way to do patches than the usual "let the user hunt for em" method in my opinion.

Ok, different question for anyone else out there who has the sound stuttering update. Does it show up in the "update news" list? My last entry is a Nov 30th bug fix and I swear I downloaded the sound stuttering patch.

Yeh, not all updates are listed for some reason, Valve probably couldn't be arsed to do it. As far as I know, if you go to properties of HL2 and it's at 100% then it's up to date.
