I just got the Orange box to play Episode 2 and Steam is requiring me to update before I can install it. Sadly in my area we cannot get high speed internet so I am stuck using dial up at home. Whenever Steam is updating it does so for about 5 minutes. It updates to about 31-32% then goes back down to 0% and back up again. I know this is normal sometimes but after a period of about 5 minutes Steam completely closes (no error messages) and seems to stop downloading. How can I update Steam with dial up??

I never had a problem updating when I originally got Half Life 2 and Episode 1. It took a while but worked every time. Help please???

you know... some one had this problem earlier, I think he did some pirate trick ( that you shouldn't do ) to fix it.

either way, have fun on 56kb/s

my laptop has steam and all the games installed and updates fine but i took it to a place with wireless so i could download it faster

is it okay to transfer all the files from my laptop to my desktop to avoid having to download the update?? my laptop has Vista and my desktop has XP

You should be fine transferring the Steamapps folder from the fully updated to the non-updated, that's totally legal. Just I don't know about Steam itself updates... they always bug me.

Ensure that you have your internet connection speed properly set in Steam's File > Settings > Download menu.

I get that problem all the time, but it's no problem. I just let it go, and it finishes, but i'm on DSL. It will get to 25%, then reset to 0...and do that a couple times, then it finishes....

Yeah just let it go. As a 56ker user myself it'll finish. Just let it dl while you're sleeping or something. Either that or bring your computer over to a friends house who has broadband.
