Urgent help - retrieving word document

I have just accidentally overwrote my final copy of my IPT report with an older unfinished one. I need it by tomorrow. Is there ANY way to recover it?

This is really important.

I don't often use word, but if it has an autosave feature enabled check the C:\TEMP folder, that's the default location for save files.

EDIT: Failing that, system restore.

Check everywhere like recent documents and temp directories.

You should always save written projects like this:

Filename_001.doc
Filename_002.doc

Same as if you're mapping for a game. Always save loads of different versions.

QFT i do the same with 3ds max and photoshop. as for the word document the autosaves are your best chance . there are also a few programs out there that might hlep you out http://free-downloadable-software.com/utilities/text-Document-editors/doc-regenerator-pid829.php .you could also try some of the tips highlighted here http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-lost-word-files.htm

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I wasn't able to locate it. Had to re-do the whole thing again. Will be more careful next time, I promise

You have to enable windows to show hidden files, because I believe Word sets the temporary versions as hidden files in the same folder the original copy is found on (unless you are working on a new document, then it would be in the TEMP dir)

As far as I recall System Restore ironically doesn't restore files, it just uninstalls/reinstalls programs and the like, but individual files tend to remain the same.

Something I found out the hard way after a virus infection.

It's ok. But i simply reccommend putting essential files on a portable hard drive and reformatting once a year, or similar.

I suppose you don't have the backup on? That creates a safety copy of the file.

I noticed that in the same directory of where you saved your word document, there are a few backups. I got back some 3-4 month old work by finding that.

Hence why system restore is useless.

System BACKUP is the only real way to go if you have hard drive space to spare.

First thing I do after a format is turn off system restore.

System Restore is OK. It can roll back a system to pre-virus stages... sometimes. You don't get back your data but at least your PC stops crashing every 5 minutes.
