A cross-border kerfuffle over a popular chocolate treat nearly cost a Winnipeg woman a $300 fine and saddled her with a bureaucratic headache.

Lind Bird was recently stopped at the U.S. border and selected for a random search of her vehicle. She was warned she could have faced a fine after the customs official found — and seized — her $2 Kinder Surprise egg as illegal contraband.

Bird learned U.S. authorities have banned the candy because they come with a plastic toy inside that could, if eaten, choke a small child.

As trivial as the border seizure may seem, Bird said the U.S. government has sent her a seven-page letter asking her to formally authorize the destruction of her seized Kinder egg.

"I thought it was a joke. I had to read it twice. But they are serious," she said.

The letter states if Bird wishes to contest the seizure, she'll have to pay $250 for it to be stored as the two sides wrangle over it.

you wouldnt know what it is because big brother OBAMA hid it from you and your fellow countrymen. this time it really isnt "only in america" ..it should be "everywhere but america ..cuz the CHILDREN!"

Kinder eggs are banned in the US? Dear god Orwell was right!

Seems they could be used to smuggle drugs as well.

not saying shes smuggling drugs

I remember some European store would sell them down the street, they used to be awesome, but over the years the toys became kinda lame and uncreative. The worst is when you'd get a puzzle, ****ing bullshit.

The Kinder chocolate is sooooo good. Milk on the outside, white on the inside.

I would prefer if the kinder egg was filled with chocolate, rather than have that capsule with a useless toy in it.

then why not buy a chocolate bar? seems like a no brainer

"WHA? not another toy!"

if it wasnt for self control 93% of my room would have been full of those unopened toy capsules

It's banned in the States? Christ, you allow ****ing guns but not a little toy?

You're really missing out, the Kinder egg chocolate is the best in the world.

betya they allow others toys that are capable of choking small kids

Never even heard of those until right this instant.

Same. Whatever, I don't care. They're obviously not worth if I've never heard of them. Why would I want one? They probably taste like shit. Egg shaped chocolate? How does that even make sense. Nobody in their right mind would want something like that, even if it didn't have a toy. What a stupid product.

I WANT ONE. F*CKING GOVERNMENT.

I'd rather have a Cadbury Creme Egg.

You can't substitute Kinder surprise chocolate, there isn other chocolate that tastes quite the same.

Never heard of this. Must mean it's not very good.

This was probably the brainchild of some idiot mother who let her stupid kid swallow the small toy. Honestly, nobody takes responsibility in the country anymore, and as a result we miss out on deliciousness like this. Friggin stupid people ruin it for the rest of us. :(

Horrible chocolate, nasty little toy. The Eggs of Numbing Inevitability.

I'd say they're doing her a service.

I can't understand how anyone would defend embedding foreign objects into children's food. Reminds me: I had birthday cake at a friend's house when I was about 8 years old. They had US coins baked into the cake! Have fun.

Well, the initial object seems that it is big enough to be impossible to swallow. But, there are quite a few less than work safe videos around the net that could prove me wrong, but I'm talking about anybody that would be dumb enough to eat plastic... A kid. It is likely that an intelligent child would open the prize, and play with the toy inside, rather than trying to eat it. Assuming all kids are Augustus Gloop short changes the rest of them.

that is disgusting :X

That's ridiculous. I am trying not to facepalm right now. You are assuming a lot of things here and implying I think children are stupid. And you seem to suggest that only intelligent children should live.

You say it's impossible to swallow DERP - well, I doubt that, but even if so - isn't that why they would CHOKE? DERP

It's possible a parent doesn't know there is a toy inside this piece of candy. DERP

It's not even clearly marked that it contains a toy.

If the parents were aware of it - what about a child who didn't know? What about a very young child who doesn't understand when you tell them? What about a child who simply puts toys in their mouth? It happens all the time.

In your opinion, how many children have to die before it's worth banning? You sick, twisted bastard.

And yet over here I've never heard of a single case of a child choking on a kinder egg capsule. Regardless this product is not meant for toddlers. I remember geting one of these from my grandparents every easter when I was over 6 years old. The only point you made that I agree with is that it should be clearly marked that it contains a plastic toy. After that it's the parent's responibility not to give this kind of product to their kid if they know they aren't old enough to understand that there's a toy in it and that eating plastic is bad.

As I said before, it seems like they would be banned because they can be used to smuggle drugs. More so than a choking hazard.

I remember these from Poland, they were awesome. I don't think I've ever seen them here in the states.

drug dealers from all over the world but the US havent caught on to the idea. I mean all you need is a chocolate egg making factory and some syringes to spike the eggs with drugs. american drug dealers sure are smrt I mean smart

The amount of money it would cost you to make each egg vs the amount of drugs you could fit in the egg probably doesn't make a lot of business sense.

I know there are many people who thinking "banning the Kinder Egg" is stupid and a waste of money and overreaching government etc.

But since 1938, it's been illegal to embed non-edible things inside of candy. Well, that's simple and a good general rule, don't you think?

When the toy is embedded inside the candy, it sends a mixed message about what is and isn't edible to children, who frequently try to eat things that aren't food, or put them in their mouth, where it may become a choking hazard. Not only that, but you know, people died from this sinister trojan horse confection.

So just leave the law alone, that's how you save government time and money.

You can't just make an exception for the Kinder Surprise and otherwise, if you just repeal the law, you need lots of rules to govern the toys.

How many people around the world die from Kinder eggs? Seems like a really stupid law.

no. the kinder egg is big. you'd have to have to sucked a lot of massive cocks to be able to swallow it whole

kids are not retarded even babies know the difference between food and toys. also babies shouldnt be eating chocolate as it can be really bad for their digestive system. the ban is stupid

Thats what Yorkies are for, massive blocks of chocolate, I think marginally more expensive.
