"A top level NAFTA panel ruled Wednesday that Canada did not violate North American Free Trade Agreement rules on trade in softwood lumber. But the United States has brushed aside the ruling, infuriating Canadian federal and provincial officials, who said Washington's response calls the entire NAFTA agreement into question.

Reviewing a string of three lower panel rulings, the NAFTA Extraordinary Challenge Committee (EEC) decided that "the evidence on the record did not support a finding of a threat of material injury" to the United States from Canadian softwood lumber imports.

The two countries have been locked for years in a battle over the U.S. claim that Canada unfairly subsidizes billions of dollars a year in softwood lumber shipments into the U.S. market.

Wednesday's decision concerned the U.S. International Trade Committee (ITC) determination of May 2002 that dumped, subsidized softwood lumber from Canada threatened to injure U.S. producers of softwood lumber."

once again the US shows it's disdain for international law

better than their original name: "Superfantabulous Committee on Extraordinary Challenges" :E

At the current rate of broken treaties, promises, etc., I'm surprised we have any credibility at all. Any credit union looking at a citizen with this track record wouldn't extend credit - probably wouldn't even send you junk mail. LOL

This is fun isn't it?? Again the United States will try to get their way by any means possible. The country just really wants to put themselves into an extrememly bad position. If this is how we have to deal with them with trading, we shouldn't deal with them at all.

maybe we should start charging levies for all that nice electricity we give to them

we pay to give the americans eletricity?

You'll have to excuse Stern. He thought you were American, so he naturally reacted sourly to you.

im hurt stern. do i need to put eh at the end of everything i type now :p

Ahh, again we prove that the US is the worst nation in the world. Not to mention it's government is the only government ever to make its own decisions instead of listening to organizations that tell them what to do. Damn GWB, hes the only president to ever do anything wrong!

:( it's hard to keep track ..and yes that would be nice :)

Get rid of NAFTA. Yes, free trade is a good thing, but there are instances when it's just necessary to put a tarriff or control imports and other things to save a local industry.

I actually agree with rakuraitenjin, i've never been a nafta fan, if you lived here pre-post nafta, or at least in my area pre-post nafta, you'd know why.

I agree with Rakurai as well ...Nafta has been nothing but a pain in the ass for canada

an example ...under Nafta a foreign company can sue the government if they feel that government is "unfair competition" ..UPS Shipping sued the canadian government because they said the canadian postal service has an unfair advantage in that they are government run ...they won a $250 million settlement, the maximum penalty

Why isn't Greenland part of NAFTA? I mean, the danish gotta let go sometime...

well they werent invited cuz no one trusts the greendlandians (I hear they have WMD)

Well eh why did you sign the agreement in the first place and become a member of nafta if you did not want some organization to tell you what to do.

man that soldier has a rifle growing out of the side of his head ................. :O

So what you're saying is, you're mad because we don't do what others tell us to do?

Because it sounds like a really great idea, and there's not many ideologically opposed to it's well meaningness. It's just not good in practice and ends up hurting various industries in each nation. It throws away the protection a soveirgn nation has to keep stable economies. If an American industry is hurting badly and we need to tarrif imports of ____ type to get that market back to strength, it should be able to be done. And that's not just for America, I'm sure Canada wants to protect something they should be able to take measures against imports to save local work.

Congradulations Stern. You succeeded in correcting a question of all things.

And no, I don't do what they tell me to do.

That would imply that I'm in Iraq shooting people Stern. Clearly, you're idiocy has leaked all over my post.

hey I thought I was clarifying this for you ..yet somehow you've muddled it even further. How could you have misconstrued what I said? where did you get this from?

"And no, I don't do what they tell me to do"

I never implied that ...I meant "us": you, me, them, every last citizen of north and central america

...sheesh, not much fun when I have to explain things twice

Why not just fix some of the rules in NAFTA? limit waste output, enforce a minimum wage, and put some limits as to how the companies can sue the governments such as in the UPS sceneario.

I haven't looked into this much so please correct me on this :p

It's not that simple, there are so many scenarios and infrinements on soveirgnty or economic unique situations where it should be done away with.

Rakurai and Stern agreeing on something?

Quick, call the press!

ya sometimes he can be reasonable ;)

jk rakurai, I enjoy our debates
