I've been seeing more and more people in 3d switching from maya or 3dsmax to Softimage|XSI saying the workflow was better and it was an all-in-all better application than maya and max.

I usually use max for modeling, but I gave XSI Exp for Hl2 a try and now It's difficult to get back to max, the workflow is indeed much better.

The annoying part of this, is that the EXP version prints out its own text on your renders, as well as on the models themselves, so basicly its pretty much unusable if you want to post renders on your modding site. has anyone come up with something? Maybe exporting and importing in max, and rerendering...?

Student license is only 175$ i believe..... you get all the goodies with it.

if you want good work flow use zbrush. Its one of the most powerful tools around.

What can zbrush do exactly? I've seen it used for normal mapping but on the other hand, I don't know anyone around who uses it for hl2.

Apart from Valve who used it :p

ZBrush is a neat program, kinda like modeling in clay, but its quite different from other apps out there, both 2D and 3D so it can be a bitch to learn at first. It's not a 2D app its not a 3D app, its kinda in the middle somewhere.

Great for organic and highly detailed objects, but not so good for machined types
