Using STEAM on top of HL 1.1.1.0 - any impression?

It'll come with HL2, so you shouldn't even have to!!

Goodness only knows what version'll ship with HL2 though...

so...before leaving for class it finished updating for the 2nd time...

this time it didn't give me the option to convert my old hl/cs install...so i just opened the monitor screen and clicked on cs.

this promptly caused all 3 windows to freeze and become "not responding" in the task manager.

i repeated this 3 times...and on the 3rd time it actually started downloading....i'm in class now :\

lame

i think Steam is going to take anywhere from a few days to a week for things to settle down.. especially when u have everyone trying to update at the same time..

as far as playing Steam games go, forget about it.. Valve's aim right now is to have Steam updated for as many pple as possible and continue adding more bandwidth for the HL2 release cause gawd knows they will need it.

so be patient and slowly but surely Steam will start to respond better and gaining more bandwidth..

in contrast, i am going back home from work

my home rig is faster but the connection is slower, so no hope for me

Yep, i think i'll be buying HL2 in the traditional way.....

i agree...things will settle down and it'll be better...i'm not freaking out or anything. just posting a lot because i'm in class and the teacher isn't explaining anything about flash MX i don't already know :p

the thing is...they released the dedicated server updates as if they were saying "get ready for everyone to have 1.6"

so now lots of servers have updated to 1.6...

now if ppl wanna play 1.5 until things "settle down," tons of servers (including almost all the ones i usually play on) have updated already :\

Yeah, think on that chaos now, with a 400mb little HL installation, and a few 100-200mb mods that half of us already have. Then HL2, which will surely be like 2gb+ in size. And NONE will have it.

Hopefully this'll be a wakeup call for valve, showing them that they need more server bandwidth, at least temporerally for big releases e.g. HL2.

the time (traditional vs buying online)
Go to game store takes 5 min
buy HL2 and com back takes 10 min
read the booklet and install the game takes 15 min
Total time =30 min

online
downloading at speed of 57.5 KBYTES with
a filesize of 3.5GB or larger (Gabe Knows)
total time taking around =15 hours

to sum up

Traditional way of buying costs in time= 30-one hour max for me
buying online through steam =15-20 hours

after i created an account, and all that shit, it started doing the steam platform update, like i expected.

but then it froze at 56%, and like 30 minutes after i had gone out and done some shit, it fu cking gave me a message, a windows error window, with a long message saying somehing about winsock and debug mode. haheha

What I have found odd is that it says your existing CD Key entitles you to a free month subscription to the following games: And then lists them. Free month? What's up with that?

Must have mis-read it. Not that I'll be playing much CS, DoD or whatever, but I thought it was odd.

Converting Team Fortress Classic files into steam cache...

it has said that for 30 min now... do I need to ctr alt delete and restart steam installer?

Jesus, this launch is like the Steam beta 2.0 launch all over again. If Steam can't get at the servers it starts acting screwy as hell, there are too many people updating at once so the downloads are crawling....

I got Ricochet to work though, and it started a server really fast, and the Friends network seems to work pretty damn well.

With any luck Valve will get some more content servers up, and in a few days everything will calm down and it should all be fine... please god...
