Just a quickie, but is there any reason why there are many servers running without cheat protection enabled?

I played on the server yesterday and a player joined called "Silicone" probably a stolen name, so no offence to any other player using this game name.

The cheats in question allowed him unlimited ammo, which when you consider 1 pulse orb every 2 seconds, made him kinda dangerous.
He managed to grav jump to some spectacular places where he would sit, and pump out nades on a seemingly endless supply.

The only way we were able to rid ourselves of this menace was to turn the game from DM to Hunt the cheat, so we all went off mob handed to mow him down before he had chance to get to far.

Sorry, if this is a stupid question, so far I am just assuming that the cheat protection is buggy. If it's not buggy then why o'h why, are server admins not actively trying to improve the "real" players game time.

yeah probably, i wasn't aware there was an actual 'hack' or 'cheat' which allowed a player to enable unlimited ammo. What doubts that theory though is that if the player was intelligable enough to know the 'impulse 101' command for all weapons, then why didnt he enable 'god' as well? :)

No, they decide how they want the server to play, change servers if you feel "real" players are needed to play hl2dm.

Yeah, there is. VAC2 is still in beta, and isn't protecting against cheats yet.

Some servers have enabled it, but that's just because the command to do so was leaked through the server admins mailing list. It's a paper tiger right now. A paper tiger that prevents about 20% of players from joining your server while they work out the kinks.

(as to whether it will ever be anything more than a paper tiger, I leave that debate to the rest of you.)

And as for infinite ammo guy - previous posters are correct - sv_cheats was set to "1".

K.

Not intended as a personal dig at you, and i did of course change servers.

The "real" player phrase is a dig at the cheats and I do not pretend to be good at the game. I just enjoy a fair game.
I also am not having a dig at server admins in general, as I admin 2 ET servers and will soon be starting LAN events in the UK.

I was merely raising the point for open debate, and also to see if there was a problem with the initial release.

I appologise for being new to this particular game.

Sorry if I touched a raw nerve.

Yeh, a client-side cheat cannot give you infinite ammo. The server decides how much ammo you have, and that decision is final, the client can't just appropriate more.
