Valve does not owe you anything

While this is theoretically correct, a successful business is expected to behave in a certain way and deliver certain things to the customer. Failure to do so will result in the business no longer being successful.

So while Valve does not technically owe its fans and customers anything, it is in their best interest to act like they do.

Do some people just don't understand? FREE WILL. CHOICE.

Valve can do what they want. They can be a good company. They can be a bad company. Its their choice.

I see that most people here CHOOSE to be idiots.

What I meant by technology being cheaper would be if you just bought a new vid card presuming that HL2 would be out soon. In April that vid card or other piece of hardware will most likely be somewhat cheaper.

In general a lot of these posts point out to the fact that people need to start taking responsibility for their actions (i.e. they upgraded their comp in anticipation of a Sep/Winter release despite Valve's delay history).

Oh, sorry, didn't read enough o' your thread I guess. :)

True, and at the moment, they're acting like a bad company.

But saying that they don't owe their customers anything is skirting the issue of personal responsibility. Ah, don't we all just love the morally relative society we live in?

when have you seen any Half Life *1* advertising? never, half-life got HUGE only thanks to word of mouth.

Because of efforts from people that designed cs, dod, and the like... THat my friend, is the community.

That is why valve owes us at least some feedback. Just a statement would be nice

You keep bashing the whiners, when you got your head stuck so far up valves ass.

IMO both the constant whiners and constant "omg valve is god we must worship them, i'll justify how thou should be thy holyness" should get modded or banned.

How did i know someone would say the stupid "valve doesnt owe you the store does", the way buisness works is that you advertise a product and people pay money for them, sure Valve could be a dick about it and say screw you guys we arent releasing the game (or could they since i am sure they have signed some kind of contract with Vivendi so actually not likely, they are legally required to deliver) and i am sure that game stores have contracts with the publisher to recieve X ammount of copies and i have paid the store with my money and they are required to give me the game i payed for. So yes going up the chain valve does owe me a game, in a sense, but i love valve, always have and always will even if they do **** there customers over now and again.

Without us there would be no valve.
If hl1 got horrible sales, no one buyed any of their games, they wouldn't be where they were today.

without them, there would be no fun games :afro:

Hell without god there would be no us and without a penis there would be no god... trippy eh?

Valve isn't screwing anyone over really. They've been working their asses off in order to make what seems to be a stellar game. If they need a few more months in order to put together a solid game, then they aren't screwing us over. They would, however, be screwing us over if they released a buggy, incomplete game this winter.

I do agree though that some sort of solid response from Valve would be welcomed. I do understand the hectic situation that has most likely taken over much of Valve so it is understandable that they would be a little late in their response.

I don't feel bad for people who pre-ordered it, nor do I feel bad for people who upgraded their computers. It's not like Valve told you "go upgrade your comp... you'll need it." In fact, HL2 is supposed to work on such a wide range of machines, I doubt anyone still has one that couldn't run it. Some people still don't get it. Valve is doing the smart rhing by not making a statement. For example. Imagine... you had something very very valuable... (i.e: a bigass diamond.) and you dropped it somewhere... or misplaced it. Would you:
a) go look for it yourself or hire a professional "diamond-tracker" (LOL) to find it.
b) tell your whole city in a wide announcement that you lost it and ask them to return it.

Think about it. They don't want to add publicity to the damn stolen code so fewer people get it and it isn't as widespread a problem. This is so simple yet some people still blame them like being targeted and hacked by someone who is probably a rabid loser who couldn't wait to play the game is their fault somehow.

prefferably a twix... TWO FOR ME NONE FOR YOU!!! GG OWNZED!! lols lols rotfls !!11?!1one eleven

(in case you missed it, Im just kidding)

yeah Valve owes you nothing, straight pure and simple.

Also, they're trying to minimize their internet connections, and last I heard, all their computers were confiscated by the FBI. If something like that happened to me, I wouldn't be in any mood to make statements, especially since so many fanboys are jumping at Gabe's throat about everything he says, especially if it turns out differently.

I just don't feel bad for Valve.

This will teach them and all other devs a very valuable lesson.

finally! someone with common sense! i agree completely with the original poster.

I actually didn't want to post this second part. But after reading through some of the incredibly... childish (it's the best word i can come up with at this point in time) posts, here goes.

Argument. I bought new hardware just for hl2.
Truth : Congratulations, you have just fallen for their marketing scam (though I wouldn't call it marketing at all since it's so subtle. My guess is that it's targeted at those who really went out and bought a r9800. *smacks forehead*) Like in the case of Q3a, which didn't really take off until the gf2 series arrive, hl2 will not run optimumly on the current generation of video cards. It'll probably take the nv4x and the r4xx to get it up to speed. Until then, I'll recommend those who have at least a ti4200 not to upgrade. Cpu wise, anything above a 1.2-1.6Ghz is acceptable.

Argument. But I bought new hardware just for hl2 and now it's delayed!!!
Truth : Refer to first point. Do your research next time.

Argument. Valve lied!!!
Truth : Refer to point 1 and 2. You do not own valve and they don't owe you anything, or an explaination. (Of course, you can try to aquire 51% of their stocks, which makes a different story)

Argument. But Valve lied about the release date!!!
Truth : It's normal for the release date to be pushed back since developers can never accurately say when they'll finish their project. Haven't everybody learnt this yet? As once quoted by a coder (I can't remember who),"If it's out, it's out. If not, ...... ".

Argument. But I've paid for my copy and now it's delayed!!!
Truth : Refer to post by <GorgeousOrifice>. You paid the store which does not produce the game. Why would you want to do that? It's your fault. If you really want it now. Send $50 to valve and ask them to mail you a cd containing the current build.

Now hopefully we can end this thread.
