In a recent update, the Pyro had his health boost removed:

Fixed team switches on Attack/Defense maps spamming the console

Fixed the Kritzkrieg not working on servers with crits turned off

Fixed some clipped localized strings in various in-game dialogs

Fixed several cases where files were synchronously loaded while the game was running

Fixed a shutdown crash in the material system

Cached rendering of item model panels to improve performance, in particular while weapon selection was visible

Added a gear symbol behind the health bar for Engineer buildings, in both target IDs and freeze panels

Players killing themselves will now give a kill credit to the last enemy who damaged them

Fixed grenades, rockets, and flamethrower being able to fire through grates at round starts

Fixed players being killed and creating ragdolls during team switches

Fixed various exploits and performance problems in CP_Badlands, CP_Well, and CP_Fastlane

Removed health bonus from the Backburner

I will actually miss some of those glitches.

Anywho, I guess this means that the people who said the HP boost was too much are right. Not that I needed it :p

I'm really liking these fixes expecially. I'm tired of trying to heal a dispenser thet's being built in the middle of a huddled team. I'm also tired of people being killed during setup. I was hoping they would fix cp_well. Demos and soldiers can jump the boxcars and attack the other team during setup. That's not how the game is supposed to work.

Playing Well last night I managed to headshot someone before the round even started. I'll get a picture of where it happened.

LOL PYRO GOT NURFED!

Now the back burner is EVEN MORE USELESS!

COMPRESSION BLAST FTW!

(hope they didn't fix my secret demo spot in badlands...)

When you were looking between the train and building?

I'd have thought a compromise of +25 health would have worked. Now I have little reason to play with my wonderful backburner. Damn you, Valve.

Some nice updates in there, though. Long awaited.

It's about time. I was getting tired of Soldiers and Demomen killing themselves when on fire.

I got tired of shooting at people who flew up in the air and died from impact.

I always wondered if they'd do that. More like Halo multiplayer... Not played any other games that did that, but I don't doubt there aren't any.

Mahahahahahaha, oh my I'm ecstatic! Brilliant update.

They going to up the flaregun by any chance?

Or fix my bloody axtinguisher?

Or assists, for that matter?!

I think the BB nerf is great, I'll still use it because I do not have to worry about having to use the airblast, pre-update style.

Plus I get a neat back-crit bonus.

I actually thought this was a problem with the server I've been using. I liked those bodies :(

How many times I've tried to heal buildings as a medic...

Fixed grenades, rockets, and flamethrower being able to fire through grates at round starts

Only 8 months late!

Yeah, I thought the team-switch deaths were only on my server, too. Didn't realize it was a game issue.

They should have reduced it to +25 HP buff or widened the angle to crit on the Backburner slightly.

Now it's a mostly useless "sidegrade", if you want to even call it that. All in all I'm not too impressed with the Pyro update now.

So, you lose some health and it's instantly useless? If all you used it for was the extra 50 health, you were using it wrong.

I want my 50 health back.

It was useful.

With my health gone they really do need to widen the field for back-crits' you can't even get them at 30 degrees.... I'm very sad now, since pyro became my favorite class.

Other than the 25 HP the backburner is more of a niche weapon. The airblast is a much more useful because of the deflect. Removing the added health makes the 100% crits more of a novelty feature.

Using it wrong? More like that's the only part of the weapon that functioned consistently.

Back crits don't work over half the time. Partly due to latency and the still-wonky hit detection of the flamethrower, but also because you basically have to be directly behind the enemy. Any turning or strafing of your target takes you out of the crit zone. So now I have the luxury of returning to the days where I'd ambush opponents only to have them turn around and demolish me. The HP buff allowed me to survive or at least endure those situations longer, but now I'm back to being cannon fodder. Without the HP buff, I might as well be using the regular flamethrower since you can accomplish the same with it nine times out of ten, only with the additional advantage of having an air blast.

Seeing as how there's little that can be done about latency and the pyro's hit detection has been a persistent problem since the game's release, I think the least Valve can do is widen the angle you have to be at to crit or buff the weapon in some other way. Maybe the afterburn can do more damage?

I was very disappointed after they "fixed" the hit detection. It really does have about 5degree angle of crits which is kinda ridiculous. I'm going to have to learn to use my compressed air unless they increase it (or fix it, if it's broken, along with everything else, including my axtinguisher).

Crits on non-burning players, lack of crits on burning players. The obvious. I'm surprised no-one else here has mentioned it. Maybe they just don't use it.

It was so useful, that extra 50hp.

Without it, I feel I won't play as Pyro as much anymore. He really did need that 50hp to be as useful as other classes. D:

Good riddance. The swarm of W+mouse1 pyros is dying down at last, now a chance for me to play pyro seriously 1st time in a month.

Had a great time time with the airblast/flare gun combo on Gravelpit today. Managed to hit a demo mid-jump on C (while defending) he shot stickies at me on the point, landed, I airblasted them, he detonated, me getting the kill and defense point, him getting the suicide (which is technically now a kill too)!

Also flaring a scout in mid flight is beautiful. As is getting an actual kill with. I still need to switch to shotgun on Well and 2fort, because of that darned water.

Crits on non-burning players, lack of crits on burning players. The obvious. I'm surprised no-one else here has mentioned it. Maybe they just don't use it.

The crit animation plays even against non-burning players, but it doesnt do anything.

Lack of crits -> no idea what you're talking about.

It was so useful, that extra 50hp.

You're doing it so wrong I will refrain from swearing.

I can count the number of times I have used he 100% backside crit function of the BB on one hand same thing with the axtinguisher. The only unlockable that I use frequently is the flare gun.

The surge of Pyros playing TF2 since it's died down from the release has never fully been restored? Reason, well it's simple the pyro was the choice for people looking for easy points with not much difficulty behind it. With the backburner there was NO doubt whatsoever something wasn't right, I see alot of you people who were using it complaining you really needed that 50hp!? Yes I'm sure you did running aimlessly in and flaming everyone, but it wasn't balanced (something Valve have confirmed by this update...and they're no fools).

It had to happen, nearly every game you play people were extremely miffed at the health upgrade. The idea being because the BB can't deflect grenades or rockets it needs the extra health. Never worked out like that, it's essentially just a pyro with a heavies health almost. This needed to happen. The idea with the BB by the way guys, was to stalk people and run out behind them.

Nearly EVERY person I played against just ran right at me and held down left click (my extra health will save me!) Now people are complaining they'll die too quickly, you are playing pyro wrong. You are supposed to flame, shotgun an enemy a couple times while retreating letting the burn finish them- watch here
Also someone said this:

The common TF2 misconception. None of the updates are UPGRADES, they are all sidegrades. Nothing is improved with the loss of another feature.

e.g. Medic (Kritzkreig - no invuln uber, Blutz - no crit hits, uber saw - less crit rate) : Pyro (Flare gun, only burn damage, doesn't work under water, axtinguisher - does 50% less damage when enemy not on fire, Backburner - no air compression)

Balance...

The Backburner is now the "classic" flamethrower with guaranteed kills from behind. I never found the flamethrower before the Pyro update to be useless...

I dunno, I just guess I'm going to be noticing the constant deaths a lot more. Because they'll be a lot more constant.

I'm glad of this as a Pyro player. I never liked having more health it made it to easy. With that extra health i could easily charge up to a Solider and survive easily. Partly due to them taking more damage and me having more health.
Don't forget the BB is an ambush weapon. Hide somewhere, like Spy's do, then when someone walks past, charge them and blast them it's highly effective.

Removed health bonus from the Backburner
Epic. This is a fantastic update. The back crits and airblast is finally a fair trade.

Crits on non-burning players, lack of crits on burning players. The obvious. I'm surprised no-one else here has mentioned it. Maybe they just don't use it.

I've never missed a crit on a burning player (although it's obvious that you use it much more often than me). I'm fairly certain the axtinguisher is supposed to have standard crit chances when used against non-burning enemies.

I think this nerf WAS too much. Poor Valve will probably update it again and do something else to the Pyro. Perhaps 25+hp? Or, at least, widen the size of the backburner "back hit" so that it is more something like the Spys, where you can also hit from the side. The crits ARE too unreliable, and now the leafblower Pyro is the obvious choice. Though, I still use the Backburner, because I don't want to master that fiddly little airblast, and I am very stealthy anywho.

I'm fairly certain the axtinguisher is supposed to have standard crit chances when used against non-burning enemies.

Check your load-out screen ;)

In hind-sight, I'm quite glad the health bonus has gone. It does ensure a more tactical approach to the pyro.

I think the majority of pyro players were BB for a reason. Because it was obviously more powerful than the AB pyro and scored a lot more points. I think the BB attracted players who play for points who had never played pyro before as well thus adding to the number of pyros in a server.

I welcome the nerf.

The BB needs to be used as intended, an ambush weapon. Perhaps some of the BB players will go back to be soldier or whatever they used to play as well. I stopped playing the pyro after the pack because there were too many. Hopefully there will be fewer going forward.

I've been saying this since the day the +50hp was announced. Finally Valve have seen sense, but imo it didn't take a bunch of statistics to prove this was a bad idea.

The common TF2 misconception. None of the updates are UPGRADES, they are all sidegrades. Nothing is improved with the loss of another feature.

I'm very well aware of this. I used mocking quotes around the word to indicate I actually think it's an inferior weapon all around. Although I think you'd have a hard time convincing me Blut and the Ubersaw aren't flat-out upgrades.

And believe me, people. I would love to use BB for ambushing as intended. I would if it would let me.

The ubersaw and axtinguisher are both downgrades in melee-only. That's about it.

The blutsauger isn't necessarily an upgrade, because crit syringes can be very useful at times, but it's certainly more of an upgrade than the flare gun.

Few of the unlockables seem like proper "sidegrades".

You lie! You never did well as Pyro! You should stop spectating me, it's confusing you.
