New update at http://gtwy.hl2arena.com/#latest

Here's the transcript of the goods:

Sifo-Dyas: to sum it up
Sifo-Dyas: valve isn't ****ed
Sifo-Dyas: only a small fragment of code was stolen
Sifo-Dyas: their main focus is on finishing the games / fixing steam further
Sifo-Dyas: (finishing including changes to the fragments that got stolen, to make the theft useless)
Sifo-Dyas: They seem pretty much have gone over to 'business as usual', with the focus on getting Half-Life 2 out the door.
gtwy: nice
Sifo-Dyas: They are still evaluating the info they got (and are getting) from the community on the theft.
Sifo-Dyas: And trying to reconstruct the chain of events that climaxed in the theft of a fragment of their source tree.
Sifo-Dyas: All in all it seems the delay is not all too bad and that they are right on track. It was also reported that it was quite a positive athmosphere at the valve offices.
Sifo-Dyas: The 2 guys from the radio site also played a new testmap of CS:CZ and said the new bots for it were really great.
Sifo-Dyas: there'll probably other news sites posting a summary as well
Sifo-Dyas: including the site of the radio (they'll post pics!!!) :D

Also, his oppinions on what has been going on:

Sifo-Dyas: but I can only give you one advice: the folks from ***** and planet mayhem
Sifo-Dyas: want publicity
Sifo-Dyas: and even IF they're behind the theft
Sifo-Dyas: they do abuse your righteous intention to inform people of what is going on
Sifo-Dyas: my name is boris :)
Sifo-Dyas: I mean, think about it
Sifo-Dyas: according to the info summed up on your page
Sifo-Dyas: almost everyone could have done it
Sifo-Dyas: someone is trying to **** with you

So this means the hunt is not over. We still have to look into many things, and I'm hoping that VALVe will confirm some of these things or not. Anyways that is it. I'm goin to bed it's already 12:30am :-/.

All that makes me (Spitcodfry) feel much better. Apparently Half-Life 2's development isn't seriously going to be affected by this, aside from them tweaking some things in the parts of the code that was stolen so that those ****s that took it won't be able to make multiplayer a cheat fest our of the it. I've always thought that the programming talents at Valve were a little more wise than the pimple-studded asses of the perps behind the theft. They'll handle this with ease.

Yep it is good news. Looks like no further delay is going to happen. Good news for us.

so basically someone listened to hlradio's hearsay, then told that guy whos running that site, and then he posted 2nd generation hearsay?

elite.

or something like that :D

Nice... Well it's good to hear that this didn't hurt Valve THAT much. They're back to work on HL2 (yay!) and seem to have the hacker ordeal almost behind them.

Tweaking the stolen code to make it useless shouldn't be that hard. I could be wrong about this, but couldn't they just change the names of functions and variables with a simple find/replace? Maybe even a global one for the whole project.

Regardless it looks like Dec could truly end up being the happy holidays for us.

ahh, yeah, you're wrong. it's not that easy.

This sounds like good news.

The skeptic in me wants to mention that Valve would probably say that the hackers didn't get all of the source code regardless of whether it was that's true or not, just to put people at ease. However, I know many people on these boards who've been looking at the leaked source code (tisk tisk) have said that it couldn't have possibly be complete.

Only Valve would know what the "proper" file size of the code would be though. I'd like to hope that Gabe was reading these forums and thinking, "only 130 MB? Well at least they only got a piece of it."

Now, as for the release date ... do games have to be let loose on a Tuesday? Because the five year aniversary of the original would be Wednesday November 19th ... how sweet would that be? (I'm guessing that's why you chose the 18th, Garp.)

full source was taken, it's obvious.
ok, you wanna put some evidence or reasoning behind your speculation? Many people have decided it couldnt be complete, because there's just too much stuff missing.

none of the resources were taken, NO MAPS, MODELS, TEXTURES, or SOUNDS from hl2 were taken, you can not play "hl2 the game" .. but the source engine, hl2's and tf2's source were taken. no matter what gabe said, or what the people said gabe said, nothing changes the facts that the hl2_src tree was stolen and put on the internet.

no one said Gabe had the entire source on his machine. No one has confirmed that the Hl2_src tree contained all of the source folders, .cpp files and .h files. All we know is what we hear. I, for one, would rather believe that Gabe didnt have all of the source on his machine, since from what we've heard, he does more directing than coding.

I kinda wish they didn't let us know that it was just part of the source. That way I'd be expecting the game to come out late next year, and then when November/December/whenever rolls around Presto! It's at my local Wally world for fifty bones.
Oh well. I hope everything is nice and secure when it comes out.

I guess valve should already know by now how much source were taken.

They should tell us now, and not let us wondering hyping in this hypothesis.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think the Valve team should be flattered about the whole thing. Mad? Yes. Flattered? For sure. Can anyone think of any other game that someone would go to THOSE extremes for?

I guess I'm just optimistic.

They've let us wonder since day one. I just dont want further delays. But I'm sure they wont tell us the release date 'til it's close.. that's just the way they are.

If you're basing that off of the original statement that the source tree was taken you should know that the original statement has been clarified. Only a segment of the source tree was taken. Not the entire source tree as was originally stated. That is what is currently circulating. The majority of educated sources are saying that the source does not include the new multiplayer algorithm in that branch. Just to catch you up to speed before you put your foot in your mouth!

I think it's easier for developpers AND for hackers to copy an entire "hl2_src" from one computer to another instead of choosing one dir here , another dir there ... , no ?
But some guy like to complicate their lives so :dozey:

I have difficulty believing that. Consider that HL2.exe can be compiled without errors. The menu code is there and it's possible to run maps. Multiplayer in some form is possible as well. This leads me to believe that a very large portion of the code was stolen. Sure, there might be some Steam related stuff missing, but to state that only a "small fragment" was stolen seems a little bit far fetched.

Arno, where'd you get all that info? Somehow I think it's rumor coupled with, perhaps, a few fake pics.

Just curious where the evidence is.

Yeah, every site says it's fake, all the betas atleast and I hear if only compiles if you put some work into it, cause it's not all there. At any rate, it doesnt matter cause it's still not HL2. Even if it compiles.I just don't give a shit and don't want to hear about it anymore.

You know as well as I do that I can't post any evidence here.
Some screenshots were floating around on IRC showing the level editor and a couple of very simple maps running on HL2.exe. Apparently some of those maps are in distribution. I didn't bother to download them in fear of virusses and because they're only simple box-shaped maps.
But the screenshots looked convincing. Especially considering they originated from various authors and yet shared common things, like the layout of the HL2 window and the font of the text messages inside the game.

All in all I don't think it's that big of set back from a coding prespective. They just need to mildly change key parts of the code. If the Steam and mp algorithms haven't been comprimised then it isn't that bad at all.

The stuff that has leaked won't be used in any commerical software. Maybe some mod teams will study it for educational purposes, but that's about it. The content, story and gameplay is what makes it so special, and that stuff can't be copied.

The graphics, physics, etc are pretty common in the next gen titles coming out, so it's not like a big secret no one else can come up with. It's just that HL2 does it so well. Even Doom3's graphic algorithm that takes hi-res models to low-res without loosing quality isn't unique. FarCry's new engine also has similar technology. I'm sure the code between the two are different but produce the same end result.

So all in all I think that Valve's number 1 priority is getting HL2 out the door, and that's good news for us.

Well, one developer does not work on the entire code themselves; there will be a team of them. What is the point of each developer having the entire code on their computer, when they are only working on a small part of it?

glad to hear it'll all under control, now just nick the ****ers that stole teh code :D

Question is why have it on multiple computers at all, we live in modern times, one codeserver is all that is needed :)
(of course, need that automatic backup system every other day or so).
Logic would dictate that this computer doesnt have any access to the net, only to the computers at Valve. And further some magical firewall prevents information to be passed from codeserver->devcomputer->internet.

I still stick with good old voodooism though, if anyone dare to steal my code they'll be screaming on the floor in no time.

If a coder wants to do a testrun with HL2.exe, he needs at least all the code from HL2.exe, along with some libraries. Otherwise it won't run or even compile.
A coder can of course put all his development stuff on a server, instead of his own pc. But if the coder can access it, so can the hacker.

According to the CNN interview with Vivendi, 1/3 of the source code was stolen.
Somebody who claims that a third is equal to "only a small fragment" is really stretching the words.
Vivendi's statement that several extra months are needed to rewrite parts of the code is also in contradiction with Valve going back to "business as usual".

Im just gonna dig a hole in my garden and hibernate over the winter. Hopefully when i defrost HalfLife 2 will be on the shelves.:x
