How many companies would let you give a game for free to others legally and fully support doing so?

That release constant updates to tweak their games to create a better experience?

That sell you 5 games for the price of one?

That have created a program that allow developers to distribute their games easier and keep more of the money that are created from their own sales?

Valve That's who. What an awesome company.

They create an engine that isn't nearly as demanding as the other games, yet still looks beautiful and runs great. AND they continue to update it.

That keep you informed as a gamer because they care about you. That creates tools to better bring together the gaming community and experience.

I'm so excited the Orange Box is coming to consoles so that many others can realize that Valve is an amazing company.

I <3 you Valve

Hells. Yeah.

Hopefully the Orange Box coming to consoles will create a greater appreciation for them (ie - teh moolahs) and allow them to do more and better things in the future. I can't even imagine what a massive step forward their next major title is going to be.

I figured this thread would be best to post in first :p
Yes Valve is truly the greatest PC game developer out there right now right next to Blizzard in my opinion.I can only pray that one day they will be truly independent and get rid of the monkey on their back which is EA.

I believe that Epic is Epic.

Valve is Valve.

And no matter what reality he calls home, Luthor is Luthor.

Ah yes, Valve holds a very special place in my heart. If my signed HL2 poster that I keep tucked away under my bed has anything to say about it. There was a time when I'd mail several members of the Valve team each day asking another HL2 related question to ad to our ever-growing database of exclusive HL2 knowledge to this very website.

I think most important has been how close they remain to their community, Gabe spends a good deal of time responding personally to emails if you are mature and to the point in your subject matter. Something about Valve remains very 'grass roots' feeling and I hope things stay that way as Steam continues to climb in popularity and pick up third parties.

Only bad side I can think of is lack of any kind of phone support - given the amount of business they see sometimes it seems rather unprofessional that they still don't have a technical support system other than a hybrid FAQ/Ticketing system to receive product support. But this is not surprising given how fast they've grown and their (brilliant) decision to not be acquired by a larger company such as EA/Activision/Ubisoft.

Valve is really a truly unique games developer, worthy of praise no matter where you stand in the industry - the big question remains though of what exactly is the next step for Valve? And I'm sure the marketing department at Valve is hard at work deciding what is best for the consumer (thanks to their decision to remain independent).

/me considers writing more hand-written notes and care package to Valve.

Here's to a company that has stayed loyal the PC Gaming from the very beginning - and fostered modding and game communities rather than fattening their checkbooks since the release of our beloved - and still adored Half-Life.

/cheers

Valve is an amazing company <3

Just check out the TF2 developer commentary, at the first info node Gabe gives his email address and says he would like to know what you think of the game. No other major developer that I know of is so personal with its customers, it's great.

I see Valve, besides the big MMOs, as the savior of PC gaming. They're the only ones that have figured how things should be done and they're doing it.

Ah yes, I have Valve to thank for way too many hours to count of fun. I read somewhere that their next focus from a non-game point of view is to expand Steam's capabilities for users. The community thing they added was the first step so it will be interesting to see what else they do.

ROFL, Valve was founded by ex-Microsoft guys.

I can only pray that one day they will be truly independent and get rid of the monkey on their back which is EA.
Valve employ EA to sell the box copies of their games, they don't affect Valve's independence at all.

This is actually perfect for me.

I lent my Steam account to a friend a long while back when I wasn't using it too much. Lo and behold, I'm finally using it a lot more often when TF2 is released in beta. But I found myself getting kicked off a lot because somebody was trying to log in from another location! Why? "Because now you have TF2".

This should solve that.

Valve are arguably one of, if not the, best developers out there.

Before this turns into another Unreal > Source discussion I'll contribute by saying that they're great.

Although I'm better. QQ

Valve are nice. I don't agree with all of their business decisions and I wish they would update their tools because they are falling behind.

It cant be denied that Valve are awsome. The Source engine and Steam are the only reasons pc gaming isn't completely dead to me.

I wanna make babies with Valve!
I shall carry the babies...woooooooooo!

it looks like my post was deleted by samon..

and the free games refer to hl2 and ep1 jimbo..

Valve have done a great job in PC gaming over these years and it looks like from the orange box and on they will continue to get even better.

Valve are indeed awesome. Although I do have a few niggling concerns with they way they perform some of their development.

I'd be more concernd about:

'I think post-orange box we can call ourselves a console company' - Robin Walker

HL4, ported to the pc ;)

That would involve taking that guys quote out of context.

Really? I think they are the only ones doing it pretty much perfect.

I have a dream: Valve working on something completely different, like a role playing game or an adventure game. The guys are able to develop deep plots and I will really like a Half-Life experience stripped of the action component. Is this blasphemy? After all, Portal is a puzzle game :)

Really? I think they are the only ones doing pretty much perfect.

Except for when they break steam, force bloat onto users steam client, are poor at making estimated release times. You know that kind of thing, Valve is by no means perfect.

Break Steam? Force bloat onto ones Steam client?

When did this happen the last time? 2002?

If they would only announce a release date until they were absolutely certain that the game would be out at that time, they would perhaps be the perfect developer.

Valve is one of the best software developers out there, though the neglection of HL2DM really irks me.

Except for when they break steam, force bloat onto users steam client, are poor at making estimated release times. You know that kind of thing, Valve is by no means perfect.

I mean game dev, but those are fair points.

Favourite games developers of all time:
Valve
Westwood
Bullfog

Game wise it's almost impossible to knock Valve. I'd love to see what they turn their talents too after Half Life.

Except for when they break steam, force bloat onto users steam client, are poor at making estimated release times. You know that kind of thing, Valve is by no means perfect.

Force bloat onto Steam client? Explain. What they are doing now is giving support to us the gamers instead of just other developers, I for one am happy we are getting new things in the client.

This is identical to my I <3 Valve thread of many years ago :D

and I still do :)

Yes, Valve certainly is one of the best developers out there because they know what we want, but they know what is right to give us in a game. Thus said, they have been around for a long time and know what fans want and try and make some of those things happen. (except for the combine sniper rifle but WTF.)

Valve are amazing, I just hope their very quick growth doesn't effect Steam as much as it has in the last week (slow downloads, initialising errors, busy servers).

Couldn't have said it better myself. No wonder Valve is the preeminent game developer in the world.

Here's to you guys at Valve! *hoists glass*

Valve is GAY!

Well, they better be, because we're going to have sex AAALLLL Night Long!

I hate you CyberPitz with a burning passion. I've now got that song stuck in my head. :(

When Valve doesn't lie to us about game features they're great.

And so far I've heard no fibs, last time they lied to us what about all of the promising features of HL2 back in like 2003/2004.
