I am talking about the release of DOOM III in the US. The release date is tomorrow, right? Here in Europe it wont come out untill the 13`th. The game has poor copy protection which in turn leads to the game being released on the net before it hits the stores. Make a good copy protection so that you atleast can halter the warez monkeys, even if its just to halter them enough to make the game hit the stores, FIRST.

Release the game in the major FPS gaming societies simultaniously, that is Europe, some of Asia and the US. The way it stands now, the major downloading is happening in Europe and Asia because it wont come out at the same time as in the US, and some people cant wait that long.

Im just a leyman, i may have no clue what im talking about, but it seems rather obvious to me after looking around just a little bit. The majority of the people are downloading it because it simply is not out yet. So making better copy protection, even if its just to delay it before it is out in stores, has a huge impact.

Think about it ... yesterday i read in a forum that 25, 000 people were downloading of the same source ... MY GOD! ... and thats just one source mind you. And many of these people wont buy it.

So ... i bet you have thought about this already, and im not sure if its possible to release the game worldwide at the same time. And you cant stop warez, thats just futile, but you can hinder it.

Valve has an advantage aswell, with the ability to download it off Steam when its out, thats good.

So learn from ID`s mistake. I bet Carmac is ripping his hair off by now.

It is being relesed simultaneously (if that's spelt right i am the man) across the globe

I doubt he cares all that much, hes smart enough to know that its gonna happen.
As for Valve, HL2's SP will be easily available. The MP will be incredibly hard to fool probably though.

Also it is hard to mod a warez version, that is one thing Max Payne 1 taught me.

Actually, while it is the fate of every game - they at least get in hand of warez monkeys AFTER at least the release (in most cases). This is one of those "before release" cases.

This line probably annoyed me the most. Just about every game gets released on the net before it hits stores. I cant wait until hl2 gets leaked onto the net 2 weeks before release all of you make threads saying IF YOU DOWNLOAD THE LEAK YOU ARE A LOSER LOLOLOL. Yes, they have done things to make it harder to crack games, but someone ALWAYS finds a way around it. And you know what, who cares if doom 3 or when half life 2 gets leaked, if its a good game then no one should worry, becuase if its good people will still buy it.

Yeah, moderately anticipated titles usually get hacked after release, but a "HOOGE" title like this? .. On the net before its out! Come to think about it, the groups must have been fighting hand over fist to release this title first. Its jst insane how many people are downloading this title ... i have never in my entire gaming life seen so many people playing this game even before its out.

That Valve will release HL2 simultaneously across the globe is good news. And even better is that its available on Steam when its released. So if its not here when release dates comes i will download it. ID should have done the same!

I predict that by 2012 there won't be no game's companies left to make games. The reason is Losing money. Warezing started to kill the music industry and it succeeded.

I'd have to fight you on the whole music industry comment, but theres already been about a billion threads on the subject already.
It would never kill the industry, rather only scale it back. Thats not likely seeing as how videogames as a whole have seen massive growth recently.

Direwolf, its been a massive growth yes indeed; But for example right now as we type there are over 250 thousands people downloading D3, do you know how much money is that if you times it by £35-$55 or more ? Yes alot of money. The point is, if a company keep losing money on that scale then there won't be a reason for the company to exist. :|

However, thats only a result of DOOMIII's popularity. If we pretend that everyone who warez's it won't buy it (certainly not the case), then DOOMIII would still turn a massive profit. I'm not gonna weep for iD because the warez guys got at it.

I agree. :p

GTA:vc is the top selling game; it sold 10M copies worldwide. I hop D3 would break that NO.

I wouldn't bet on it, simply because DOOMIII isn't cross platform like that. Xbox has very little presence worldwide compared to Sony, and VC works on most PCs.

Doom 3 - No similtaneous world-wide release, no DVD version, although there is a colletors edition.

Half-Life 2 - Similtaneous world-wide release, DVD version, collector's edition.

Its bullshit that there is no DVD version for Doom 3 - according to id, they didn't include DVD version because its costly. Thats a load of crap, theres eventually going to be a transition from CD to DVD and major games such as Doom 3 need to be DVD.

seriously this is not a new thing..practiclly all games\movies\apps\music released are avilible cracked on the internet...

Doesn't Steam verification prevent people from pirating Valve software?

Yeah, everyone seems to be going crazy as if this is the first game ever to be warezed.

Nah its not that ... i mean, its not the first warezed. Obviously, but people are going crazy... there is a news article about this on bbc, 50 000 people downloaded it, according to estimates during this weekend. That must be a record! Many of these wont buy the game even though they thought they would once it was out, but now they have a warezed version and dont wanna spend the cash. Some will buy it anyways, and some have already a coupon for it, changing that coupon for a copy when its out, even though they download.

The figures are dodgy at best, but you can be sure that ID and activision has lost a ton of money. But then again, they will earn a ton of money aswell ... as one said; Carmac may not be able to buy his fifth lamborgini, and he may not be able to put his rockets on mars, but ID will be rich none the less.

But yeah, its a sad day for the industry, and if this continues we will se a significant drop in new experimental titles coming. And this will also deal a heavy blow on the PC gaming and eventually migrate many companies over to the currently more secure console gaming.

Yeah, it seems like a worldwide release would cut down on piracy a fair bit.

if valve werent completely retards they would guard there shit better. (source code)

Becuase you, of course, know more than them :upstare:

Don't you think your new avatar is a little over-the top Badger? We know you're a moderator...we know you can ban people...good for you.

Generally I really like you guys but I must say, it really seems like you mods can power-trip sometimes.

The problem is, most of the pirating happened before STEAM ever came out.

I predict that by 2012 there won't be no game's companies left to make games. The reason is Losing money. Warezing started to kill the music industry and it succeeded.
I doubt that the game industry will die, and the music industry is far from dying. The RIAA is crying because they didn't make millions of dollars of profit (what do you expect, their music sucked), boo hoo while other musics became hits because *gasp* they were good.
Same goes with games. If the game's good, it will be profitable.

"The RIAA is crying because they didn't make millions of dollars of profit (what do you expect, their music sucked)"

RIAA is not a record company, they dont make music and they dont sell records, they earn their money by representing the record industry. A record industry watchdog if you will... hired muscle... the goon at the door, checking your ID if you will ;)

RIAA; Record Industry Association of America ... same with MPAA; Motion picture Association of America. If the record and movie industry looses money and corporations goes to hell, they are not doing their job and will cease to exist. But that will hardly happen yet.

If the music is good, people will buy it! Simple as that. I buy my records, but fortunately i like music that is published on smaller labels, like for instance Warp Records and the like. This way i support the smaller labels and can drop the big, huge corporate label that screw their musicians and send RIAA goons (read -lawyers) after ordinary kids and old people.

Same with games... well ... not completely, but still... if the game is good its going to sell tons! The same with this title, its going to sell, but many wont buy it because they , the industry havent learned the system correctly, or they are just too short minded and wont spend the extra cash it costs for good copy protection and world wide release!

They think; "Its going to cost too much to release this game world wide at the same time, and excellent copy protection costs too much and will eventually be cracked anyway" ... BIG MISTAKE! ... Good copy protection will be cracked, but the key is that it will take some time! Like for instance with XIII (remember?) ... a big title that was out in stores before it was cracked. Atleast in the US, but not in Europe which lead to warez downloads in Europe because it was not out here yet. Also BIG mistake.

And Soldiers Heroes of WWII, EXCELLENT copy protection that partly made kids BUY the game because it was out in stores FIRST! It took 2 weeks before it was on major P2P networks... Now THAT is good copy protection that served its purpose!

Copy protection schemes have been developed for about two decades. And they still don't work. Probably never will.

yes,
and Doom 3 had to take it the hard way, they beat Valve's release of Half Life 2 which is quite a large task but thye paid heavy for being in such a rush, did they think that nobody would leak such a great game if they could get their hands on it days maybe vven a week before release? Valve was smart setting up Steam, it's a great reliable program and they have new software coming out with HL2 to make sure that noone cheats or has a bad copy, you just get banned... so I have a feeling HL2 will be a bitch to download and try to play on the net, Im not sure about SP though, which I am really looking forward to!

If the game is good, people buy it if they have money. A game like HL2 has lots of replayability, so expect people to buy it. $50 is a LOT of money for one game, I as a consumer want to make sure it's worth that investment. Usually, I buy my games off eBay or CD keys off eBay. :D I did for Call of Duty, BF1942, and Condition Zero. So I have them legally, without paying $100. :p

Sorry I didn't read the rest of this thread because of the pure stupidity of the topic creator, but the only reason this game was "leaked on the net" was not because of some warez monkey hacking into iD software, or from a person getting a copy because he is John Carmack's nephew/brother/cousin/grandpa and then in turn decided to leak it onto the net, it is because a few stores decided to break the rules and sell the game early. So technically your entire post is null and void.

There is not a single game in history that has perfect copy protection, so don't go riding your high-horse and telling Valve how to do their job.

Good day.

Erm, isn't Steam designed largely to stop this sort of stuff? The SP version will be warezed very quickly but the internet versions will most likely never be propery hacked, because Valve can and will change the code base frequently and keep the legit community moving forward enough to prevent illegitmate play.
