The first phase started on the 26th, last thursday, and now the 2nd one started yesterday which was exactly one week. Something tells me only a few more updates are coming and then HL2 is GOLD/release...WOO!!!

Yea i agree with ya, i think thats the way its gona work out.

My guess is one more preload phase of maps/models (although I thought I heard that some models were in the first preload?) Anyways, hopefully we'll have gold soon.

I think we've got the majority, and only need the source engine itself...

/me wants gold announcement

What I dont get is Gabe saying the game is 3.5gb uncompressed and 2gb compressed.... we've already hit 2gb compressed havent we?
Or is all the ports included in these preloads too?

Definitely plausible, but of course I don't have the foggiest idea what'll actually turn up in subsequent stages: let's see, we've had textures, sounds... so yeah, maps, models, and the entirity of Source to go.

One thing to keep in mind, regardless of what so many people seem to be thinking, there's nothing stopping Valve from adding extra sounds or textures to the preload at a later date- so the game isn't even partially content-locked yet.

I think one of the tests is gona reveal that HL2 has gone gold

Imo there's still one preload phase, then it goes gold. Wheter that phase starts nextweek, we don't know.

id say one more preload then the final 10mb source engine. is so close i can feel it.

edit: after the fake announcement of gold status i read that someone else was told it would go gold this week. maybe it will.

yeh but on the steam home page it says that when the agmes is released we will be able to play it strait away.

yeah, the third preload is probably gold...

if there is still another 1.5gb to go then i recon that there will be another 2 phases of pre-loading left, before it is finally released. so that might be another 3 weeks, so the final week in september looks like a possible release period for hl2.
wat do u guys think?

ok here the status.

We have been give 2-500 mb compressed preloads so far. Each is 1 GB uncompressed so technically we are at 2 GB right now out of 3.5 GB total. So there is either 1 big 750 MB compressed (1.5 gb uncompressed) preload left or 2 smaller preloads left. Either way, the end is near!

Wow, another preload huh? I opened up Steam and it had already downloaded 51%. Amazing. I'm sure that we MIGHT have one or two more preloads and then the last preload will be the Source Engine to bring it all together. Sounds good. Maybe we can crack this preload file like we did the last and get some more tests!

And the final preload will generate a huge message on your screen 'The preload is now finished. Now pay up sucker before you hard drive is formatted !!'.

Make sure to thank Lunhtimemama for that Flash Vid.

It will go gold before it starts pre-loading. They need time to make CD's too you know.

I think that when it goes gold (and the last preload is downloaded), the game is unlocked for steam buyers/ati coupon holders. Which means that people buying via steam or have a coupon get to play hl2 weeks before store-buyers do.

....valve get a bigger margin off steam-bought hl2's because vivendi is not involved in that process.
....also it stimulates people to buy hl2 off steam ;)

what do you guys mean by "go gold" lol sry im a n00b at that word.... "gold"

The term "going gold" is derivated from the following:

"when a game is ready to be sent for distribution, a golden master cd is created for duplication at the distribution factory."

Now that rarely happens nowadays, but basically it means it's done :) and going to local gamestores around the globe.

And since many of us have it preloaded, there should be no time in between the gold phase and the unlocking of the game. Gold status is should be irrelevent to preload people. After all what do you think is being sent to your hd in the preload??? My money goes on its the gold version of the game. We dont have to wait for it to go gold, then ship to stores. We just have to wait for them to finish and unlock the preload.

No, you're wrong.

After all gold is a term used in the manufacturing process. Which preloaders are skipping entirley.

You're wrong. Valve already said the steam version would be unlocked only once the retail version is ready to be sold to the public. Otherwise people would buy from steam and vivendi wouldnt get as much profit.

he's right about the when it goes gold we'll have access to it part

do i need to say it again?

no we wont, preloaders wont get it early (maybe only a matter of hours, the time it takes to drive to a store and install)

I think your forgetting the point of the preload. It is for that exact reason. To ensure that we get the game as soon as it is released.

If all goes well, preload 3 will be next Thursday and possibly gold on the following Friday for the game to make the "summer" release date.

yeah i am wondering this same thing.. i mean we have already what? 2.5GB of pre-loaded data? or somewhere around there.. so how much more pre-loading can they do before hitting 3GB (Gabe said the game was approximately 3GB right?). hmm.. maybe the game has gone a bit past the 3GB mark since Gabe last mentioned this?

i loved that flash, it was entertaining and educational.. now how many flash movies can claim that? :p

They can't release yet! There's still Bink videos of the E3 2004 demo to be released. ;)

I would say two more pre-loads, then x weeks of silence, the gold announcement, and after some more weeks; the release.

guys the files in the .gfc's are compressed and so far theres been two of them each about 1 gb.

What, are you sure they are compressed? Because if they are, there will be no more phases... I don't think they are compressed, no. They are encrypted, though.
