Valve preloading new phases every week?

The files inside them are compessed I think, though the GCF itself isn't. For instance, the first preload contained 500 meg of data, but the file was 1 gig. It uncompressed to about 800 meg though acccording to some guy here.

How do you know it hasn't already gone gold? There could be CD's in all the stores already, more arriving every second...

Then, once the preloads are done, and the CD's are all in stock.. Then they release the floodgates...
