Valve reveals Aftermath price to Shacknews!

damn!! hopefully this is a sign of prices to come!

GO VALVe!!

Yep, and I just know I'll start seeing the "WHY IS DOD:S SO MUCH THEN?!"

Good price. $16 AUD for an expansion that would usually cost over $50 AUD for any other game.

Well to be fair, this isn't an "expansion" per se - it's an episode and will be somewhat shorter in length than a traditional expansion.

I just hope it’s not to short, enough to leave you satisfied.
$16 AUD price FTW, hope they keep these prices up with future episodes.
I wonder how much it will be boxed? Not like it matters, after getting HL2CE retail I'm never buying retail again if I can help it.

Valve has said that it is 1/3 as long as HL2 - what that means I have no idea because some of us finished HL2 in 10 hours, some of us finished it in 20 hours.

I'm assuming Valve means in terms of levels/chapters.

should we expect retail to be more? the commies at eb will probably sell it for $30

You will not get a retail version of Aftermath at the same time as the Steam download. What Valve intends to do is to release a compilation of episodes seasonally to retail customers. I would imagine that 3 or 4 episodes would equal on regular expansion in terms of price and length.

It's EA, they're going to squeeze as much as they can out of the franchise.
They could have bundled DOD:S with the HL2 Game of the Year edition, but no, they're putting it in a bundle with CS:S.
They'll release individual episodes and also big packs every now and then, calling it the HL2 Collecter Pack or something like that.

uh thats very.....just hope I dont finsh the game in 2 hours :\

How many sub-20 dollar games do you typically see in the new releases area for PC games? The price is just way too low for retailers to give a damn about it. Expansions never sell nearly as much as their source game, so even if they sold a million copies; the profit they would make on it would be a fraction they would make on a $50 game that sold like 300,000 or less.

Aftermath may be the game that changes this, but I wouldn't get my hopes up of seeing a standalone retail package.

hmm... $12.95?
i hope Aftermath isn't as short as i am getting the impression of it with that price :(

Please read what I posted earlier again :)

Hmm .... well in the Uk that would amount to about £6 - ish . . or it was on the exchange rate last time i checked, doesn't seem a lot of money .. interesting, have to look into it some more i think, no doubt places like Game over here will charge us a ridiculous price of about £29.99

EA is releasing DOD:S, CS:S and HL2:DM in the one package for about $30AUD, so why not Aftermath?

I expect max 6hours of gameplay.

If I could get 4 hours of gameplay for $20 or so I would go for it. 5-6 would make me really happy though. As long as it is quality hours and not junk it is worth it (like max payne).

i thought it was going to cost twice as much. i wonder why its that cheap.

Because of steam. With steam they don't have a publisher taking 70 percent of the profit.

Now they can take 70 - 80 percent of that money and use the rest for bandwidth. That is still an increase, considering that for an expansion that usually costs $30, they would get $5 each while the publisher takes the rest. They make more money this way, and sell it at a cheaper cost.

It's like when Britian was colonizing the side of North America, and taxed us etc..and eventually only our tea, we got pissed, merchants started selling cheaper smuggled tea, so Britian went ahead and allowed the people making the tea to be able to sell it directly to the Colonies taking out all the middlemen, thus allow them to sell it for dirt cheap and make much more of a profit.
This pist off the merchants, who then dressed up as indians, borded a ship, dumped all the tea off.

American History :)

well i know about the greedy ****s who are destroying the industry known as publishers. but i didnt know they got 70-80%
i thought it was more like 30-60 at most.

I believe Vivendi was taking 70% of the retail profit of HL2. I know gabe or someone mentinoned 70%

£6? That's... insanely cheap :O

I can see why EA aren't selling it individually now, they'd probably only make 50p profit from each copy!

If EA was selling it retail they would take the 70%, they don't touch steam sales. If EA was also selling it they could set a resonable price to make money.

Ummm, they are though?

IIRC, there hasn't been an announced package for specificly Aftermath; it's being sold with HL2 Platinum but there hasn't been a standalone SKU announced yet, and with it only costing 12.95 I can see why.

I'm thinking Blue Shift length personally. That was more an "episode" than an Expansion. So about 3-4 Hours.

If Aftermath is 1/3 of the length of HL2... and HL2 is completeable in 2 hours... How damn short is Aftermath gonna be!?

Does this mean that the full expansion Aftermath will cost through steam only 12$?
Or is it just the first -episode- of the expansion. Then you have to pay more to get another one?

Anyways, sounds nice.

HL2 is completeable in 2 hours? You have a very funny perception of time.

This is the first episode of the post-HL2 events. Each episode will cost some money but not a whole helluva lot as they will all be around this price. After 3 episodes or so, you would've paid for the equivalent of a full expansion with the same amount of playtime - if not more - than a regular expansion.

For example, let's say each episode is 3.5 hours long. After 3 episodes, you have about 10.5 hours of gamplay for a price of about $40. This is about the same price you would've paid for the Doom 3 expansion which is about the same lenght or the Call of Duty expansion which was only 6 hours long.

Woohoo, price is awesome, but for me- not that low, considering i've purchased hl2 for $23.

How about the payment methods? CC?

Whoa, thats pretty freakin cheap. I could actually afford that with my own money for once.
