According to a thread at steampowered.com, Valve has banned 20,000 Steam accounts for illegal activities, primarily using a popular CD-key and exploit to get a "free" copy of Half-Life 2.

I just don't see what this is accomplishing. The people looking for cracks and things don't want to use Steam, so how is banning them from it hurting them?
