Valve Unveils First Generation Steam Machines

Valve has sent out a PDF that lists the prices and specifications of the twelve Steam Machines. The twelve partners on board so far: Alienware, Alternate, CyberPowerPC, Digital Storm, Falcon NW, GigaByte, iBuyPower, Maingear, Material.net, Next Spa, Origin PC, Scan, Webhallen, and Zotac.

We've also gone ahead and written out the list of specs ourselves. We'll have to wait for the hardware vendors to give us the finer details. We do, though, have the details for the two CyberPower machines and Digital Storm's Bolt II. Anyways, see the complete list of specifications below:

I still just want to buy Valve's first-party chassis. It could be completely devoid of parts, for all I care.

With those prices it's very hard to see what the whole point of this is supposed to be. I always presumed Valve would be selling their own consoles at a loss. If that's not the case then what's the whole purpose of this partnership? It's just a bunch of manufacturers selling expensive PCs as per usual.

i only see maybe 4 consoles on the list i sort of like. everyones right to see that the prices are just too much on the high side, most of us are looking for either $700 sweetboxes that can run everything, or streaming machines that cost less than $100, there's also a large population who would rather get all the power they need in a $500 box
instead theres the $500-600 boxes that dont seem capable of running every game, and the $1000+ boxes that are complete overkill for the average gamer.

if you look at zotac and cyberpowerpc, these are really the only two that are hitting the sweet spot in terms of power and price range. IBuyPower may also be in the right spot, but it looks a little too cheep.

Aesthetically the Alienware one is pretty cool. The CyberPowerPC one looks like of cool but also kind of like a router.

SteamOS is based on linux so you can run any linux software. As far as i know office is not on linux, but chrome and FF is.
