Valve put the final nail in the press conference coffin late last night, with an e-mail confirming that its press event at the Regal Theater on Monday has been completely cancelled. Definitely.

Those who head over to the theater expecting to see portals, Vortigaunts and iconic nerd goatees will be greeted with tumbleweed and the sad faces of the other few people who somehow missed the announcement.

Valve sent the rumour mill into overdrive last week when it sent out a cryptic email telling journalists that the planned Portal 2 event has been replaced with a 'surprise'

Gaming blogs had suggested that Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or even Half-Life 3 could be the new 'surprise' - but Valve boss Gabe Newell has poured cold water on the suggestions, confirming that the surprise is 'Portal 2-related'.

Fortunately, all is not lost though; Valve related activities will still be conducted during E3 and are open to those with an appointment.

the surprise is... we've cancelled!

surprise!

I'm not sure why CVG have posted this...it isn't news it was just a press release from Doug Lombardi last night clarifying something for journalists to make sure they don't get confused with the old event which was cancelled ages ago.

CVG seem to immediately post any Valve press statements without reading them these days. I've pasted the original email content from my inbox below so you can read what they've used as a source. As you can see...it's nothing new.

Hi,

Just a quick note to clarify the Monday Press Event at the Regal Theater is completely cancelled. Please do not head over there expecting to see us <g>

All the Valve E3 activities are being held in MR514 during the show. If you still need to make an appointment, just let me know.

Cheers

Thanks for the clarification Glenn, also, bad CVG! BAD!

I suppose this thread can be locked then, thank you for clarifying.

But by the sounds of that e-mail it seems there is no surprise event. I'm confuse

Maybe the surprise is that they're releasing Portal 2 the same day?
That'd be surprising.

Uh, guys we can't show Portal 2 at E3 this year because... we're releasing it! LOL!

Right ok...the original Portal 2 event was like a party with free drinks in the Regal Theatre which is opposite the LA Convention Center (where E3 is held).

Valve cancelled this event.

Valve made a new Portal 2 showing in the LA Convention Center (conference room MR514) and cancelled the event in the Regal Theatre. Instead or to soften the blow Valve said there would be a surprise, specifically a Portal 2 related surprise on TWO OCCASIONS THEY HAVE SAID THIS.

Pretty much everyone knows the new event is in the new place, but the email Doug sent last night was a final confirmation to say...the original event is cancelled (in the Regal Theatre). It's really that exciting...or not?

I'm happy to leave this open for the time being if anyone else is still confused.

Ah ok, so we will still see some new stuff then. Good

So... what you're saying is... that the surprise isn't episode 3?

OK guys, we are in that phase where fans, people, magazines, cats and dogs realized that the surprise is not going to be about Ep3/HL3.

Well, now is the perfect time to announce Ep3/HL3! A real surprise. It's for sure. Valve, you son of a ****, gotcha!

Merrily waiting for my certain Ep3/HL3 surprise...

Counterstrike Source 2!

*shit-storm*

One week before release:

"Counter-Strike Source 2 was never in development. All Counter-Strike Source 2 licenses have been converted to Half-Life 3 licenses. Would you like to begin preloading now?"

So whatever they're showing will be behind closed doors... for the most part

"All hats have finished loading."

This is pretty much what i think, quoting some random guy:

If there's anything I've learned from E3 is that the whole thing turns out to be a disappointment, and the "surprises" were speculated by fans already. The only surprises that were not guessed or rumored are small random things that you'll go "oh, I guess that's pretty cool".

I'll tell you what the surprise is, it's something so small, and so simple that valve is now backpedaling because of how much they screwed themselves, and didn't realize it. I have no doubt they are hard at work on ep.3 or hl3 or what ever, but they aren't showing it at E3. For some reason they didn't expect everyone to assume they were showing Ep.3 at E3 when they mentioned any sort of surprise.

They probably assumed it because they specifically said that the surprise was about Portal 2. And I haven't seen any backpedaling. The only legitimate things we've heard from Valve since the surprise was announced was "lol nope" responses to emails to Gabe.

It really sucks alot that Valve's E3 conference is canceled, following the delay of Portal 2. However, it can't really be helped. Already I'm concerned that they're doing maybe a bit more than they can handle and they have so many projects they are doing. Right now, not only are they developing Portal 2, but also DLC for the Left 4 Dead series (though there will be 1 last DLC for the first L4D), DLC & updates for Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2 Episode 3, and continued Mac updates. And on top of all this, patches for their games (especially for Half-Life 2 and Episode 1, which are buggy at the moment) and Steam client updates. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know of any other developers going through so many projects at once. It's true that they do have multiple teams working on these but the heads of Valve could be having their hands full managing all this at once. I'll admit that I am a little frustrated that we won't see any major titles by Valve this year, but I also do understand that they're only human and can only do so much.

They were GOING to have a cake eating contest, but the conference got called off cause Gabe ate them all.

Ah, that's ok. My brother and I are going to have our own Left 4 Dead 2 cake tomorrow. :D (Tomorrow is our birthday, and we're gonna have frosting topping with Left 4 Dead 2 designs). But I seriously can't help but wonder what the surprise will be tomorrow? I'm thinking either exclusive DLC or Portal related merchandise, but we'll see I suppose.

Now that I think about it, the 'surprise' could be a 'first look' Trailer.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Also, I wouldn't count updates, patches and fixes as projects.
