Vehicles in MP

Space... hmm... I wonder if it's possible to simulate realistic space environments with Source. When you're floating around, would it work to fire a gun or throw something to gain momentum? Moonraker fight!! :sniper:

yes, if I understand correctly.. Hl2 can have spatial fields (or at least mutliple areas in one map that can be defined to have varying gravity/etc)

so in essence you could have people running around on the ground, shoot themselves into the upper part of the map (decrease player size, increase map size) and then be caught in simulated space.
or something.

We know that Valve has at least been playing with vehicles in MP: remember that chat way back they had on IRC where they discussed how you'd work the various different simulations of wheels and bounding boxes in MP? The real question is: which game are they now targeting this for? My strong, strong guess is TF2. DOD is the wrong style for anything other than small things like motorcycles. CS:S could have them but won't upon release. So if they have been playing with them, chances are it's in the course of developing TF2.

I just did a little quick searching and came up with the following in the "Valve Speaks" articles on this site.

Will the player take damage if in an open vehicle? Also, will vehicles take damage from certain weapons?

Yahn Bernier: Yes and yes, unless we change our minds.

Can you have more then one person in a vehicle at any one time?

Gabe Newell: Yes, Source supports more than one person on a vehicle.

Will you be able to shoot out vehicle's tires in single or multiplayer?

Gabe Newell: There's nothing in the physical simulation that would preclude this, but we don't do this. You could also fail springs or shock absorbers trivially, but we don't do this. Exploring more complex vehicle dynamics is the sort of thing the MOD community will do well.

If you jump on top of a vehicle, and while it is moving fast you jump off of it, will the player still have momentum or will the player not be affected by the speed of the vehicle?

Gabe Newell: The player momentum is modelled. You will have the velocity of the vehicle.

Similarly, if a vehicle is moving at a fast speed and stops suddenly, such as if it hits a wall, will the player be jarred off of the vehicle and fly forward or simply stay on top of it?

Gabe Newell: If the friction between the player and the vehicle isn't high enough, you will slide off.
