What are the heaviest songs you guys have ever heard? Reason i'm asking is because i want some more heavy songs.
Mine are:

Judas Priest - Metal Meltdown (live)
Strapping Young Lad - Far Beyond Metal

Here's a smattering:

Origin - Portal
Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference
Anaal Nathrakh - The Supreme Necrotic Audnance
Immortal - My Dimension (weak song for Immortal, but heavy)
Behemoth - Antichristian Phenomenon or Christians to the Lions
Nile - Masturbating the War God, Chapter for Transforming into a Snake, Execration Text, Kheftiu Asar Butchiu, Churning the Maelstrom

And one you probably already know Strapping Young Lad - Oh My ****ing God

not a fan of heavy metal myself...to me it just sounds like hairy men going OOOOUuuuRooooOorROOoooooRRRrrrroooooo as loud as they can into a mic...

no offense to fans or anything

Dismember - Where Angels Fear to Tread
Amon Amarth - Death In Fire
Behemoth - LAM, Ceremony of Shiva, Chant for Eschaton 2000, Conquer All... heck, anything really.
Nile - Again, anything. Laivasse pointed out a few of the greats, though.

That's what it sounds like because that's what it is. But that's not all it is....ahaa!! :naughty: Vocals aren't as important in metal as they are in many other genres. They're more of a rhythmic marker. They're also meant to express extremes of emotion; deep growls/vicious screams=instantly transmit emotion.

SearanoX said:
I would think that transmitting emotion is an absolutely integral to any song. Therefore, by your own words, vocals should be more important in metal than they are in other genres (and to a degree I think it's true, though rap is excluded for obvious reasons).

I actually find the drums the most important element in most metal, closely followed by guitars, then vocals last (but far from unimportant). But everyone has a different take.

I find that half of the bands mentioned here aren't half as heavy as they think they are. You might want to try some Amplifier or Oceansize for a different approach to heavy.

Hrmm, what kind of different approach? What genre do they fall into, broadly?

Prog, I guess. But don't let that put you off. A couple of tracks to try would be Motorhead, Airborne, Panzer or The Consultancy for Amplifier and Catalyst, Amputee and Relapse for Oceansize. Don't expect a lot of speed though.

Does anyone know any heavy metal bands without the death metal vocals?

Kind of like Black Label Society etc...

Behemoth-Conquer All (whole Demigod cd)

Crimson Moonlight-VoR

Cryptopsy- Voice of Unreason

Antestor- Rites of Death

I've heard a few BLS songs from one of their albums with the word "book" somewhere in the title.

You might like Alice in Chains.

Hahaha, I've already got all their CD's/DVD's except for SAP.

RIP Layne!

Of course, if we're talking 'atmospheric' heavy, then you might want to check out some drone doom/doom metal bands - Khanate and Sunn O))), for example.

I don't think Sunn O))) are that good.

Anything by Nile, Melt Banana, An Albatross, etc other spazcore bands.

Surprised no one has mentioned anything by Metallica yet, although not necessarily the heaviest metal band ever they definatley have some kick ass metal songs under their beltsl; The Four Horseman, Whiplash, Leper Messiah bascially anything pre-Black Album is their heaviest stuff even if some of you call it thrash metal

I'm going to get into this power metal thing :) I like Iron maiden and Metallica, what bands do you recomment to ween me in? :D

To the original poster, I'd suggest:

Dimmu Borgir - Puritania

That is one of the most heaviest songs that have stuck with me. It's more of a death metal than anything else, but it was one of the first metal songs that got me into the genre. The song features no OOOUUUGHGHRUGHGHGHGH growls (just some comuterized vocals about human extinction that come in from time to time :) ), and it's mostly heavy guitar riffs. After all these years, it is still one of my favs.

Hmm, power metal uses lots of fantasy, heroic, and to be honest quite gay themes  BUT it can be quite good....Blind Guardian are a band that loads of people really like, even lots of people who don't normally like power metal (eg, me), so they might be worth a shot. They have an album based on the Silmarillion (Nightfall in Middle Earth) so if you're into Tolkien, even better. As for other bands, I'm not the best source of power metal knowledge...Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica, Kamelot...? Someone else can be more detailed...

Thanks in large part to the saintly drumming of Nick Barker *reverence*

I don't like Dimmu stuff, but Nick's drumming is always fantastic, can't be denied. Heavily triggered on that album, but it fits in well with the polished orchestral sound.

Heavy metal? First thing that comes to mind is Black Sabbath.

Heavy Metal is for losers! Yeah. It sucks that much.

I'm saying this, and I leave for california in 2 hours. So I won't have to read through all the flames until I get back :P

You just don't like us metallers because we beat you up and take your money.

Solution: get more money!

whoa, someone else that actually listens to Crimson Moonlight and Antestor. sweet.

The heaviest songs I have heard are on Demolition Hammer's Epidemic of Violence--A wall of heavy heavy thrash sound from '92. An amazing(though extremely hard-to-find) album. If you are into Slayer, Destruction, Kreator, Dark Angel, and the likes, then you will LOVE this one--the production gives it a much fuller sound than any release by the aforementioned bands as well :-)

I've heard of a band called Demolition, they supported Testament on the 8th. Very good band. But I've never heard of Demolition Hammer. I'll check them out if their anything like Destruction or Kreator.

the heaviest song ever made and im serious is kill your mother rape your dog by dying fetus. and also anal ****'s songs are insanely heavy all of them its ****ing crazy ass shit!!!!!

SearanoX said:
Anal **** really isn't that heavy. It's just a bunch of guys playing shit as fast as they can and screaming. 99% of their songs are improvised, as well as a good chunk of the lyrics.

EDIT: Why shit is not censored yet c unt is, I have no clue.

Heavy or not, I wouldn't listen to Anal **** solely because they are just a joke of a band and the guy behind them is a total tosspot-waste-of-space. If there's substance to a band I can overlook my detesting its members. But Anal **** is just for people who still find loads of novelty in swearing/stepping over the political correctness barrier.

and searanox - the c-word is considered much much more offensive than "shit"! I've seen programs on TV where they bleep the c-word but they don't even censor the f-word. Most offensive word in the english language maybe.

@ TheBleeding--
Century Media UK has Demolition Hammer's Epidemic of Violence on cassette for like 2 pounds, so more than worth the price. Plus they are very nice and very quick. Order now!(Just don't order Time Bomb--fecking terrible!)

Oh, and while you are at it, check out http://www.gammacide.com/ and listen to their samples. They will blow you away--They are my all-time favorite band and this has been one of my favorite albums for years! The re-issue is almost ready, re-mastered and including two "new" songs they wrote back in the early 90s, but just recorded last November with all the original members. Enjoy!

My wallet is looking good for once so when I get the time I'll order that cassete.

And I'll check out Gammacide, too. (:

LOL. Hate that stuff. Don't like Rap, Don't care for most classical or country, and some others.

I'm more into punk rock. None of the new stuff though.

I just don't happen to like heavy metal. Sounds like a bunch of shitty singers banging on sheet metal and scratching chalkboards. Garbage.

And more seriously, my post was in jest. I won't just come into a thread like that and attack things people enjoy(for the most part. I can't help but bashing rap). It was just fine to see people get riled up and not have to respond for like 9 days cause I was on vacation.

It should be mentioned that part of the reason why nu-metal is so lame is because it is essentially another form of punk, rather than another form of metal. They both have the same equation: anger+simplicity+guitars. Nu-punk.
