Very heavy metal

It should be mentioned that part of the reason why nu-metal is so lame is because it is essentially another form of punk, rather than another form of metal. They both have the same equation: anger+simplicity+guitars. Nu-punk.
Anger? Don't you meant angst?

not sure if anyone has mentioned them, but mastodon are a good heavy metal band.

you all need some ska :P

Trivium, heard them the other day on Kerrang, very good metal

Just bought Trivium's album-Ascendancy, omg, this is some kick ass metal :smoking:

I'll check them out.*

*Note: 10% chance I actually will indeed "check them out."
I wouldn't, Trivium are pretty much half-thrash nu-metal. I can tolerate a few of their songs, but generally... bleh.

There are better and heavier death metal bands. I don't like DF, they're kind of deathcore as opposed to dm...too many crowd-pleasing groovay bits, and not enough substance. Plus I saw them live supporting Nile and I wasn't impressed - fine for the drunk people there who wanted to stagger around and wave their arms, but Nile buried them (and that was despite it being a below par show for Nile standards...).

i generally don't listen to metal, but i tried listening to unas slayer of the gods, and it was pretty cool. The growl the singer makes is almost inhuman. The drumming is awesome. Reminds me of the Doom game songs, for some reason.

Nile are a great band, coming in for some slack now because of their growing popularity. Popularity which, unusually for a metal band, is actually due to how great they are (as opposed to bandwagon-jumping).

I love them. Reminds me of Behemoth. Though I wish there were a few more Egyptian references, they're still excellent. Very complex music, and their drummer is one of the better ones in death metal that I've heard. Their best songs are definitely the longer epic ones with lots of interludes and classical instruments. Favourite song so far is Unas Slayer of the Gods. Great stuff.

Black Seeds of Vengeance has a few more instrumentals and Egyptian-style interludes than ITDS, although it has a slightly more impenetrable production. Among the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (their first) is okay, but it seems obvious to me that Nile were still finding their feet on that album, despite many people rating it as the band's best work. The new album (Annihilation of the Wicked) should be out about now, and I'm going to get it when I see it.

About the vocals - in past albums vocal duties have been shared between at least 3 members. Now that Jon Vesano (bass) is gone, the vox will probably just become the duty of guitarists Karl and Dallas (Dallas essentially being made frontman).

Nile have had a different drummer for every album. Tony Laureano (ex-Angelcorpse) is the drummer you heard on In Their Darkened Shrines. Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal) drummed on Black Seeds (apart from 1 track) and did an equally stellar job. Pete Hammoura was the band's original drummer and appeared on Catacombs. George Kollias is the new guy drumming on 'Annihilation...'. I've heard a couple of tracks from it and while it sounds accomplished enough, it seems they've taken just a small shift towards more linear songwriting. George appears to be a great and hardworking drummer (with blistering double-kick speeds), but maybe lacking some of the inventiveness of those who came before him.

These are only my impressions from hearing a couple of tracks, mind, and I'm sure the album will still be fantastic - but ITDS was near unbeatable anyway, so....
