I've made a couple threads over the last year about my mobo's loud-ass NorthBridge fan and how I was going to replace the mobo sometime.
Well, over the last month or so, the loud NB fan on my mobo started to be less and less annoying and was replaced with a weirder noise that sounds like something's bumping into the blades. The loud annoying hum is now completely gone, but this other sound is here. At first this new sound only was during the first 5-10 seconds of startup, but now it's pretty much constant.
I opened my comp up to take a look. My NorthBridge fan is completely stopped (it must've stopped like a month ago - no temperature differences or problems). The sound is coming from my gfx card's fan which is covered by a little screen so no cord can bump into the blades. Because of the angle, I can't see the fan in motion at all, but it must be running decently or my gfx card would be overheating pretty fast in games.
I've had zero problems with computer stability or temperature due to these crazy fans. My case is pretty well ventilated. I have 2 other fans besides the PSU's dual fan and even a little vent that funnels the air that's being pushed away from my processor outside the case. I've had no problems whatsoever.
But from the sounds of things, the fan on my 6800GT is probably dying. I recorded the sound of the fan on my mp3 player as a .wav file...but I don't know where to upload it so you guys can hear it.
Anyways, I need a budget solution to this problem. For now I'm content with sticking with this mobo even though that fan is dead...as long as there's no other problems. I don't have the $$$ to spend on a GOOD graphics card if this thing dies. I just planned and paid for a trip to NY this August...so all my discretionary spending $$$ is gone for the time being.
I'm just hoping to:
(a). Find a way to fix my gfx card fan (I still need a place to upload this sound for public hearing).
(b). Find a cheap replacement for it that will be a slight/passable upgrade (I don't see the 6800GT PCI-E being sold anymore on newegg).
(c). Find a new mobo that will support my current components and be highly upgradable (dual core, vista compatible, etc) for the future.
Any of the above things would be fine by me.
