Video Game Capabilities You Lack

What RTS are you playing? I'm genuinely curious, because I'm not sure which one has such limited success builds.

I exaggerated a bit but C&C3 has pretty narrow options for one.

Another thing I dislike about online RTS play is that the game are usually decided using only a fraction of the units, a lot of times higher-tier ones are never even built, even if they're fun to use.

RTS and Xbox controllers.

You guys are just a bunch of pussies. RTSes take a lot more game-to-game specific skill than FPSes do which is more of a general skill.

I KNOW THAT'S WHY I AM NOT GOOD AT THE THEM GOSH

*cries*

I fail at FPS games, racing games are all I'm somewhat good at

MMOs. I always get bored around level 20.

Also, those shitty spammy RTS'. I love more strategical or turn based ones, though.

Whats with all the hatin against console fps controls. Can you imagine playing COD on a PC. Well you can but what would be the point. I suppose different games work on different platforms. Its just what you are used to I suppose.

WHAT?

NO REALLY.

WHAT????????

OK, yeah, I see your point with C&C3

Oh and guys the Total War series aren't pure RTSes, they're a hybrid with TBS so they don't count.

Actually I'd say the Total War games are closer to RTTs than RTSs.

I get destroyed in ultra-twitchy first hit insta death ultra realistic FPS games.

Give me more arcadey shooters and I will win in the dance-of-death that players participate in ussually, but in twitchy insta kill games where being faster with your aim is more important then being able to maintain it and I get chewed out.

Driving games that don't involve shooting the other cars. Can't do them. The only racing line I know is the one that involves driving into the nearest car as fast as possible.

RTS, like everyone else.

Also, the ability to focus in a sandbox game. I always end up just fucking around, really. I don't think I've ever completed the main storyline of a sandbox game.

I'm pretty good with console FPS games though, I'm always surprised how shit everyone is online on the Xbox. The Xbox controller is just really good.

Same here. The only Sandbox I finished was the original Mercs for xbox.

I found out not long ago I suck ass at any shooter game that makes heavy use of covering and squad tactics such as Gears of War and to some extent, Mass Effect. I discovered that in Mass Effect, I usually just build up Shepherd's skills to the point of being mainly a one man army while turning up the squad AI setting's to fend for themselves. From time to time I give them individual orders and use their tech and biotic skills as though they were Shepherd's own , but I normally hate babysitting AI NPCs. I'm simply a terrible field tactician in games.

I usually prefer the more traditional solo shooters like HL2, but Mass Effect is an exception because it's just so awesome imo.

Also in a similar case, RPG strategy games like Orge Tactics. I usually find myself building one squad unit to "minor god" status while just plowing through an entire army of Lotus soldiers rather than using actual "tactics" with a group of squad units.

The odd thing though is that I own at Advance Wars, which is basically a "turn based" war strategy game and not an RTS.

EDIT> I also fail at stealth games. Basically any Tom Clancy game or others like Assassin's Creed. Like some have said, I just don't have the patience for stealth. Just games where you kill and blow up everything "un-stealth" like for me a.k.a Rambo style.

The only exception here for me tough is Beyond Good and Evil. Plenty of adventure elements to even out the stealth parts.

I hate RTS. I don't even like the idea of it. Yet I love turn based strategy games, as long as they are simple: Chopper beats tanks, Jet beats Chopper, A/A beats aircraft, foot soldiers beat A/A, etc. Terrain modifiers, fuel and ammo supplies, and bases (battalion generators), as well as the different distances covered in one turn. Then you have carriers and battleships and submarines... These things I understand and get right into the fun of the game.

You just described Advance Wars to a tee.

These type of "Turn Based Strategy" games are basically a glorified version of chess tbh.

Odd then that I hate chess but really like Turn-based strategy.

Turtling only gives the opposing player an advantage over you resource wise and hence doesn't work. Some people just expect to be good when a new RTS game comes out but it isn't that kind of game. You have to spend the time and effort to become good.

Advance Wars is nearly identical to a game I played in 1991 which was a rip from some other game before it. Not that I have a problem with that, but I'd hate to see a [nicely polished] rip get all the credit.

Well, I never picked up chess, but regardless, you say that like it's a bad thing. Chess has been around for a while, so I guess it's good if you know how to play. But anyway, If you want to call it that, that's cool. I find the glorified version much more interesting then, so be it.

Knight takes Rook and all that ...
RTS is easy.
For me, I just don't like it. I'd rather play a challenging game of Risk, or something than learn a new game with 100's of things I don't care about. But I just like the fact that I can spend as little or as much time as I need to make the perfect decision. I like to watch carefully and see exactly what the opponent does when I make a certain move. Learn strategies, and learn the opponent rather than learning an overly complicated game. Of course, I just haven't seen one that interests me yet, or I'd take the time.

Another Genre out there that's extremely fun is turn based strategy that moves to real time during battles. Obviously, the different pieces have different strengths, movement, health, and all that good stuff, but the terrain modifier can give a 'pawn' type piece just enough of a boost to get the job done. The two parts of the game combine seamlessly and it's a pretty sweet rush.

Since I was a kid, it's been one of the main reasons I've been looking forward to the future of gaming so long. To battle some [photo-realistic] mega-titans on a strategy grid. Think Huge stone beasts and shit. ...There could even be ... dragons, Saturos :naughty: If one got good enough, then a Knight could slay your dragon. Of course, those aren't the type of creatures I had in mind for the game. In my mind, it's some of the darkest most realistic original creatures and beasts ever seen.

I can't play RPGs because I hate them so much. I'm one of those people who like to explore every single option available, so the nature of RPGs to have you make ENDLESS choices is too much for me to handle! The only RPG I got a significant way through was Fallout 1, and I was totally frustrated that there were a limited number of save spots so I was unable to keep going back and choosing every different option. This is also why I prefer linear FPS's over sandbox games.

Apart from that, I think I probably suck at RTS games -- I don't play multiplayer much but the only time I can recall winning was when I got to play the Britons in Age of Empires II via luck-of-the-draw, starting at the latest tech stage (Imperial Age?) with all techs fully researched at the beginning. In that scenario, playing as Britons feels a whole lot like cheating since hordes of longbowmen beat pretty much anything. I'm decent at singleplayer RTS though and have managed to make up a few "strategies" in Age of Empires that actually work, which is pretty satisfying.

I'm also not great at FPS because I generally suck at aiming while running around really fast -- I don't play multiplayer much for FPS either, but I'm usually ranked in the bottom half, and only make top half on very good days or if I happen to be playing with other people who also suck.

Edit:
I completely suck at Console ANYTHING, probably because I've never owned any console newer than the Atari and Colecovision. I've played on other people's machines a few times during college, and I usually suck terribly because I can't figure out the controls. The only time I started doing OK was after playing tons of Gears of War co-op with a friend. I'm surprised we even made it to the end given my extreme levels of suckage.

RTS, Guitar Hero, and most puzzle games. I don't know what it is, but I just fail at these kind of games.

Good at FPS's, RPG's, and Fighting games if I take the time to get good at them.

I also suck at finishing games!! I start a game and then jump to the next one quickly. I think its gamers ADD, but I just generally suck and finishing a game in one shot

If it's a good rip, then it deserves that credit imo. :p

Are you kidding? I love Advance Wars! It's the only reason why I even care to own a DS. The Trauma Center series being a distant second reason.

I have this problem too. RTS games take too much time to learn for my tastes. That's why I prefer TBS games like Advance Wars instead.

Sounds interesting. Examples?

One of my fantasies as a kid too. Wondering how realistic games will become and all. Too bad it's been a somewhat of a choppy evolution thanks to greedy publishers and impatient fanboys. Why from a RTS standpoint though?

BTW, I'm sort of a dragon sadist tbh. I like beating up dragons, I just don't like it when lowly, pathetic human knights try to do it and succeed. It's a tired, dumb cliche that the "good guys" in shining armour always win. If by an Ent or a gargoyle or even some original bad-ass creatures like you suggested, then that's fine. Heck, I'd even prefer it if the dragon gets beat up by a pink teddy bear than a human being. Humankind is too retarded and immature to deserve any glory for themselves imo. Both irl and in fantasy.

I cannot apparently play FPS games on a console. It's like being in control of a tank; I can't do it. Give me a mouse and a keyboard and I'll kick anyone's arse, but I can barely handle the frustration during single-player.

I forgot about advanced wars. The game is good, I just can't do the serious tactile strategies.

There was another board game my friend would always get me to play when I was a kid: Axis and Allies.
See also

* Axis and Allies Miniatures
* Axis & Allies (1998 video game) - This was true to the board game and is very rare and sought after (particularly Iron Blitz). The 1998 release has several bugs that the Axis and Allies World Club has fixed in an unofficial patch.[citation needed]

* Axis & Allies (2004 video game), a real-time strategy variant of the board game
Looks like the 2004 version also included a turn based mode.

I didn't realize they made them into video games. I'm going to look into these.

He also got me to play Koei games like Nobunaga's Ambition. At first it seemed boring, but after you figure out what you are doing, you become a greedy little Napoleon.

The only one I played was Archon. Such an old game, you had to be there to appreciate it. There was also Archon Ultra and Archon II, but I never played those. There was also Battle Chess, but I never played that either, so I'm not exactly sure what that game was like. These games are old old old.

Primary weakness: Strategy games (AoE, CnC, SMAC, Civ...)

It's not so much that I suck at them, I guess I just don't like games which force me to commit to decisions I made long before I had all the data. I hate going, "Shit, I should have done such-and-such 45 mins back.."

I have no patience and usually do whatever it is too soon or too quickly and get my assed kicked.

That applies to RTS and FPS. I work well with a team though.
