video games and homocidal feelings

Arrgg...MAVAV.

Normally I'm quite the gentleman, but this angers me so much I die inside each time I see or hear about it. Okay, not really. I just get a little ticked-off, make a few jokes, etc.

Why don't you quit your yapping, and bake me a f*cking cake!?

lol. I love their little "fact" section, which is just crap they made up to make their cause have a purpose. It wouldn't have one if they didn't include all their lies.

The only "valid" point they have is addiction and that doesn't really affect most gamers. I could quit right now.... I mean it..... I'm.... what are you looking at?!? STOP STARING AT ME!

Just though I'd post the facts for you lazy people.

Videogames: The Frightening Facts

Fact: Videogames aren't just for "fun" anymore, the videogame industry made a net income of $6.3 billion in 2002, surpassing even the movie industry. Developers profit and continue to take advantage of today's youth with cute, loveable, addictive, and recognizable franchise characters. A practice and strategy similar to those used by the tobacco industry.

Fact: Videogames have been proven to prevent the development of the proper social skills and interaction needed for a long happy and enjoyable life. Young gamers are prone to being burdened with depression and sadness all throughout their life

Fact: Health studies have found that even those casual gamers suffer from low self-esteem and self-pride compared to their athletic and more socially accepted peers in their same age group. Young gamers were found to be more likely to become lifetime gaming addicts and becoming social outcasts.

Fact: Hardcore gaming not only leads to videogame addiction and abrupt lifestyle changes, but to crime and felony as well. Hardcore gamers never buy computer videogames. Instead, downloading illegally copied videogames or “warez” is the only method acceptable by the underground. Buying a legit copy is grounds for abandonment by community groups. You may not be buying your child videogames, but they can illegally obtain them off the internet.

Videogame Addiction: What to Watch Out For

Symptom: Child spending numerous amount of time in their bedroom and at home. This is a classic sign of a growing gaming addiction. The child spends the majority of his time at home in his bedroom, only breaking out of his “base” for food and bathroom breaks. This behavior is commonly known as a “gaming binge” which can last from a couple of hours, a whole night, and in some extreme circumstances, a full 24 to 48 hour gaming binge (occurring usually on weekends).

We highly recommend your child's bedroom be absent of all forms of electronic entertainment devices. This includes a home computer, and/or videogame console systems. It is best for all electronic entertainment devices be placed in a common area where a clock is present and adult supervision is available. If this is not at all possible, we recommend having your child's door remain open and be checked in on every hour. Parents should be extra cautious around the time of bedtime until morning.

Encourage your child to be more active. Arrange for your child to go over to a friends house for the afternoon, setup a gathering party at your home, or even sign up your child for an after school sport or activity.

Symptom: Poor school grades
A typical report card by a troubled videogame player:

Computer Education - Excellent
English - Poor
Mathematics - Poor
Science - Poor
Social Studies - Poor
Physical Education - Poor

Never assume drugs or otherwise is the problem for your child's poor academic performance. Videogame addiction is not to be under-estimated. It is a serious epidemic plaguing our children nationwide. We recommend getting professional psychiatric help.

Symptom: Unusual "Role-Playing"
Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) is a digital escape from the real world for emotionally unhealthy and mentally unstable people. It is a place for computer enthusiasts and social outcasts to gather un-bothered and un-harassed by the realities of real life.

While the focus and idea behind MMORPG seems utopian and innocent, the emotional and mental wellness of the gamer can be severely affected: increased anxiety and irritability, argumentative, appetite and weight loss, impaired judgment, paranoia, sadness and depression, loss of interest in appearance, and sleeplessness

Videogame addiction has become so serious now that the mass-media now compares videogame addiction to alcohol and drug abuse.

MMORPG's are the most addicting genre of videogames available and developers are selfishly aware of these statistics. Developers take advantage of the situation by charging people hefty monthly rates for their "services" and release mediocre expansion sets to keep the game play fresh. We caution parents to never hand out credit card information or sign up their child for any suspicious online and monthly services.

MMORPG videogames were recently labeled as one of the top 10 leading causes of students dropping out of high school.

Videogame Violence: The Hidden Dangers

Danger: Do videogames make people violent?
Yes. What was once a debatable question, is now fact. New research has concluded that videogame violence and behavior related violence are in fact closely related.

Danger: Do videogames teach people how to kill?
Yes. When videogames were linked to the Columbine high school shooters, a frenzy of new research was launched, in which, one team of researchers discovered that first person shooter games do indeed teach gamers with the basic knowledge of how to kill. This research arrived be so conclusive that the U.S. government Army developed a free videogame to be used as a virtual boot camp and killing simulator.

Pressure, did you get that from MAVAV by any chanec, mothers against video game addiction and violence :)

Um yes thats where I said I got it...

EQ is the only game I've heard is truely addictive although I've never played it myself because I don't like paying per month for a game.

wtf mate? GV will own you if your a commi

Why is it only *mothers* against gaming and all sorts of other fun etc.. ??
What about the dads and any others that don't like gaming? Why should anyone take them seriously if they're discriminating? (Sort of seriously speaking ... )

I guess the mothers are the ones who has that kind of time to bitch about whatever they don't like...

And btw...

Developers take advantage of the situation by charging people hefty monthly rates for their "services" and release mediocre expansion sets to keep the game play fresh.

Would the moms be less worked up if they were *good* expansions.?

I guess this is individual. I game alot, but I also practice martial arts, and I'm "sociable" ...
And I really hate it when parent's try to "set you up" meetings with friends or some kind of exercise (used to happen to me a few years ago).. really, the only thing's you're going to keep doing are things you choose yourself.. Atleast that's how it is for me.

We highly recommend your child's bedroom be absent of all forms of electronic entertainment devices. This includes a home computer, and/or videogame console systems. "We would also highly recommend cameras in the bathroom and bedroom to make sure your child isn't doing anything improper." or what??

So?? If you like music or games you can download them from the internet too. Should no children with access to the internet be allowed to watch music and movies, because they're also available on the net?? Move them to a monesterry for christ's sake..

Mentally unstable?? Emotionally unhealthy??
Get the guy some care then! Don't just blame whatever the person likes doing!!

Danger: Do videogames make people violent?
Yes. What was once a debatable question, is now fact. New research has concluded that videogame violence and behavior related violence are in fact closely related.

Research by one group of researchers has concluded that. Lots of other researches have proven otherwise.
I'ts great how the whole article uses "facts" to strengthen their argument, when their "facts" is not believed to be facts by the majority of people who've researched the issue.

Really, this argument I really don't like. Everybody
knows that to shoot someone, you point a gun, and you press the trigger. Just because people play games (fps, whatever) doesn't give people military training or anything!
They're referring to Americas Army as a sort of Virtual boot camp, but ffs, that's just PR to get people hooked.. You don't learn anything in AA you wouldn't know otherwise..

What the hell am I doing ?!?!?!??! It's late, and I don't want to go to bed.. I don't like people that blame videogames for their lazy, screwed up kids, and I guess that's why I'm writing this quite huge post.....

this is not really that seriously written, and I'm sorry for spelling mistakes..
Im 17 and Swedish, so I'm entitled to some spelling errors..

If you read all this, I don't know if I should congratulate you or something...

Sure, as long as you don't threaten democracy.

Ohhh, HL has the most lovable zombies! And you can't forget that cute little Nihilanth!

That quote seems to be aimed almost directly at Nintendo. Who else has more loveable, addictive, and recognizeable franchise characters? That offends me. Nintendo is one of the most respectable companies in the entire industry. I've been playing Nintendo games for 17 years... and I don't do it just because I think Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Fox McCloud, and the rest of the gang are loveable or addictive. Nintendo games may frequently feature some of the same characters but they are almost always include unique and fun gameplay. Though, I will admit that the Mario Party series has gone a bit far in the number of rehashes.

Silent Hill uses this technique too, I mean, what child doesn't love psuedo-sexual, S&M inspired, rape-victimish, moaning, groaning, nurses swinging large lead pipes. Those evil game designers, using such child icons to make profits....for shame.

edit: what the hell is so "frightening" about that fact anyway?
Oh no! Video Game companies make money....umm....that's evil...because...umm...you use money to buy..umm...guns! Yeah, that's right! Video game companies are evil, they're trying to shoot are children!

I fail to see how buying a game made by the same skillful developers that made previous games with those recongnizable characters is worse than buying cheap (in quality, not price) products with a Barney (or similar children's TV character) logo made by sweatshop workers in Thailand.

If you want to complain about bad business practices start with things like that. While you're at it why don't you attack every other American business... because they all do things like that (or worse) to sell products.

Turning your PC off dosn't count as suicide

haha, oh man, a few of the replys here are pure gold!

I'd go through that bit and critique it, but you said it excellently Sorze. As to all the violence-related ones, they're all piles of shit, according to everything (reputable) that I've read for the term paper I'm writing on violence in games. I hereby vote that we start the GAMAVAV, the Gamers Against MAVAV in order to set the record straight. (I wouldn't happen to be thinking of nasty rumors and hacking . . . )

Atleast one person read all my latenight typing.. Allright!

That's what I thought also, about the Facts By biased pieces of shit

GAMAVAV is a really great idea though.. I'd looove to see that happen.. I second that vote.. :)
