I can't seem to find help anywhere with the problem I'm having, so I'm going to ask here as well and hope someone replies.

I was afraid HL2 wasn't going to work on my pc, but my friend assured me that it would. It wasn't until the demo was released that I downloaded and tried it out - and it worked perfect. At low resolution of course and the game still looks great. The problem I'm having is with the retail version I bought off steam. For one, the title screen shows buildings with different patches of color which I know I've seen before in other games but don't remember how to fix.

The other problem is that the first level won't load at all, it gave me a memory error last night but after redownloading it just freezes before the last two bars fill up. However, over levels will load just fine.. Only everything is white and flickery. I'm not sure if there are some settings I need to change or what, but if the demo worked just fine then why isn't the full version working at all?

My computer specs are alright I suppose, I added some stuff to my Dell 2400. It has a P4 2.6GHz, 620MB o' RAM, a GeForce FX 5200 video card (which is said to be supported) and.. Well, the rest is pretty average. Onboard sound and the such, but the sound in the game works just fine. It's the video. Thanks for any advice on the matter, it's just been frustrating that once I finally get this game that I can't even get it to work.

the specs of my system are slightly less than yours ...
- P4 1.7 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- GeForce FX 5200
... and i don't have any video issues using the default settings HL2 gives me. all i can think of off the top of my head is upgrading your video card drivers. can't be of any more help, though.

I just uninstalled all my drivers and the card then installed the newest driver I could find. It looks much better, but the problem is still there for some reason. I just can't figure out what's going on, if it works on your computer then it should work on mine. It has to be an option or command I need to add to the start up of the game to fix this, so I'll just scour Steam's message board or something again. Thanks for the help though. :)

Woo!

I figured out what the problem was! Or at least I think so anyway. I was looking around and found a command to fix the memory problem which I the game was having, and another to force DirectX 9. The forcing of DirectX seems to have done the trick, no more weird colors and no white flashyness blinding me. Just in case someone else has this problem..

Is what I did was create as shortcut to the game on my desktop then, right clicked it and went to properties. I added this to the end of the target line:

+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 -dxlevel 90

Space before the +. And.. Well, that fixed it one way or another. Now I just hope I won't get them crashes I see people posting about all over the place. x.x
