Hey people. I was wondering if any of the vast number of intelligent and knowledgeable members of this forum would be able to help me out here.

What I need is a Video Production program.

For a school project, I'm going to be splicing together some footage from different dystopian texts, and what I need for this is a Video Production program with which I can import various video formats (Raw DVD footage in VOB format and Video footage from FRAPS) into and splice together nicely with the odd transition.

Any suggestions?

***Edit : Okay, you know what? This site is a freaking mess over TF2. I'll ask later. Good luck with the Beta everyone!!!

Why is one better than the other? And, my god, this site is dissolving into chaos because of TF2.

Adobe Premiere is more open and seemingly more user-friendly, while Sony Vegas will allow you to modify and customize every single thing you could wish for. "Acquiring" and using it is a bit of a bitch because you have to register every extension you use. Not hard (and "free" :p), just takes a while. I use Sony Vegas because of the absolutely enormous array of possibilities. It's like Photoshop for movies :p

A friend of mine used Pinnacle.

PINNACLE???? i didnt know that people still had copies of that :S.

whenever you're searching for a program just hit osalt it has a list of open source alternatives to popular commercial programs , so you can get the functionality you need without wreaking havoc on your conscience (yeah ...right) .

no, use the latest version of adobe premier pro. It's one of the best video editing programs out there, Sony Vegas is also a good choice, but personally I think Premier Pro is more advanced.

Anyway, either program will fulfill your needs. Just get whichever program is cheaper (by the way they go for hundreds of dollars...or just get it off the internets).

premiere is the best, most powerful video editing software there is except for avid or fcp... so get it. vegas might be more userfriendly though

Viper, I haven't actually used Vegas so I was sort of guessing :p

Okay, new issue. I got me a copy of Adobe Premiere, but it cannot import .VOB, .mp4, or .avi formats. These are pretty damn common formats, and I'm kinda annoyed that for no apparent reason it just won't work with them. Can anyone give me some advice on how to remedy this (downloading an add-on to be able to convert them?) or else a link me to a good, versatile video converter?

Plzkthxbi

I can add them on version 2.0, you have the right version, yes?

I have Premiere Pro version 7.0. I mean, can't import .VOB's? That's retarded...

Video editing programs are often quite picky with formats and codecs.

You do not have Premiere Pro 7, because that does not exist. However, Premiere 7.0 is the same as Premiere Pro 1.0 (Premiere and Premiere Pro are different, the pro series is newer and a rewrite of the old ones).

I don't know about vob, but you can surely convert the mp4s to an appropriate file type, and the .avi problems you're having probably stem from the fact that video compression on most downloaded avi files is extremely high and all editing software has trouble with this. You'd need to convert it to DV AVI (uncompressed) which is unfortunately quite a pain in the ass.

Rename the .vob to .mpg.

As for avi's, I'd suggest using virtualdub with the huffy codec and re-encode it. It'll be a larger file but at least you'll be able to edit it. Can also try using a 4cc changer to change the 4cc to divx. Premiere can usually handle divx better than, say, xvid. But even if it's xvid you can just change the 4cc instead of re-encoding, and it could work.

For mp4's you're most likely going to need to get something like Super and convert it to avi. You can try using virtualdub and avisynth using a directshow filter, but doesn't always work. Check out http://www.videohelp.com. Tons of apps and guides for various formats.

Any video editing software runs like ass on my computer. I tried to cut a band of Brothers epidsode into clips for use, and it took me over an hour.

Takes the piss. I blame 512 ram and a crammed HD.

I'm sorry, I may be missing something here, but how would one rename a vob file to a mpg?

right click > rename

click yes to change the extension.

If it's still on the dvd, obviously, you'll need to rip it your hdd first. try imgburn or dvdshrink for that job.

Umm... It's still a vob. Didn't that technique only work in older Windows?

control panel > folder options > view tab

uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"

If you're already set up that way then it doesn't matter. The description may still say vob but it should work as if it were an mpg. That's all vob's are anyway.

-edit- also, virtualdubmod (not virtualdub) can open vob files, so you can set in and out points and just save a portion of it as an avi and then edit that.

Okay, I'm getting there... I'm just rather irritated that everything isn't incredibly easy, I guess. Any good converters out there I should know about?

Fool.

I'm sure I told you specifically to get Pro Elements. This is why you should listen to me.

I love this thread so much, because it is EPIC WIN, and that means mad props.

And this is my first post ever!!1!!!1

ok.....

... Yeah... Realised after I posted it that that was way too over the top for a newbie post. I apologise to all who have the misfortune of reading it...

If that was your first post, then why were you saying she should have listened to you? You didnt post anything before.

Multiple accounts.

As for Premiere, yes, it's a whiney bitch and has issues importing almost anything but a DV stream. It hates anything compressed. I believe it has something to do with the way it interprets footage, i.e. it has to do some rendering just to preview any of the compressed footage. I've tried doing projects with still camera videos, highly compressed. Upon loading the footage Premiere just hangs and racks up more and more memory.

You just called me a she... And he's my friend. Yeah, to be honest I'm damn annoyed at Premiere, I've been working all day to cut out a tiny 3 minute segment of The Matrix and actually get sound for it.

Yeah, I know her, it's not multiple accounts and junk, so don't ban plz :(

Okay, fixed some problems, here's a new one.
The video input in Premiere is constantly stuttering, making it faster than the audio and resulting in some epic broken-ness. Any methods to cut down this stutter/skipping?
It's rather irritating, as you might have guessed.

If there's a red line above the timeline that means you can't preview it, at least not very well. Press enter to pre-render and the line should turn green, and play a little smoother in the preview window. Takes a while to pre-render tho.
