Their internet sucks.

Half the time my internet is down. This is nothing to do with the hardware I use, they just dont supply the internet in the first place.

Anyone got a better internet supplier?

[preferably cheap]

BT internet? I have a 2MB connection which costs me 16 quid a month. If you're in the UK. You can get faster ones as well. My friend has an 8MB connection for 26 pounds a month.

I've had NTL cable (Now Virgin Media cable) for about 7 years and in those 7 years I have had loss of service for 2 days. That's really not bad going... Are you using their cable or DSL service? If it's DSL then loss of service is understandable (DSL providers suffer signal strength issues) but if it's cable then it's a hardware fault.

I'd rate Virgin Media 10/10 for quality of service. Granted their standard DNS servers suck, but so does every ISPs DNS servers. Once you specify your own (half decent) DNS, theres really no issues at all.

We've been with NTL for years too. According to my Dad, we use Cable, and then wireless from downstairs ---> upstairs.

Normally, you'd go straight ahead and say "Its a problem with your wireless", but its not. We lose our connection to the internet downstairs where everything is connected with cables.

I dont know whether its just poor service for where we live or what, but its sucking atm.

If a cable connection isn't properly configured it doesn't re-register the ip lease and disconnects when that lease expires - Means you have to manually reconnect by rebooting etc.

It definately isn't a signal strength issue, since the whole point of cable is using fibre optics which suffer no interference and can travel stupidly long distances with no signal decay. The fact you are getting service proves you're allocated an ip and your cable modem is registered.

If you ask me, all of your problems lie in your routers internet connections config.

Might be worthwhile looking at the state of your nearest NTL exchange box in your local area (the green box on the pavement). If chavs have pulled the cover off and pulled all the wires out or pissed inside it, then that's your problem. That happens quite a lot in chav-ridden areas. One of the days that I had no service was caused by a car totalling the NTL box.

Hmm, I live in quite a quiet area, so I doubt Chavs will be involved just yet. (For example, on Halloween we only got 1 group come to our door, all who were 5 or 6yrs old)

I will talk with my Dad about the router.

Thanks for the advice.

I use eclipse. Only limits are between 6 and midnight, and its 50 gig a month at that, the rest of the time, its true unlimited. Its ?30 odd a month, but I hate bandwidth limits.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ is a good site for looking at various ISP's and seeing how they rate. The forums can be particularly interesting, since there is one for each ISP and you can see the state of the service at a glance by checking the tone of the threads. Whatever you do don't go with Tiscali.

My 20mb Virgin Media connection costs me ?30 a month.. it's very reliable, and we've experienced no downtime.

I'll second this, I was with NTL cable in my old house, and since I moved into my new digs we've had Virgin Media, and it's been excellent.

Are you CitrusC?

I thought this was about a channel for virgins

It's funny how you capitalise the word 'chav.'

Had NTL/Virgin for about 4 years now. I haven't had any reason to complain, I can only really remember one day where the internet was out. The rest of the time all the problems have been at my end, generally my shitty router being at fault.

They usually bump up your bandwidth every year or so as well. Also no download limits is always a bonus.

Was havin some fun playin the big HL2.Net arranged TF2 game, when my internet crashes again. Dell network assistant says:

"We have detected a problem in your Service Provider's Network. You should contact NTL infrastructuer - Hersham for help with this problem"

.. YAY

My internet kept dying today. I would be playing TF2 then I would get a connection problem. A few minutes later it worked fine. The router indicated that the internet was connected when this was happening.

Any ideas?

Virgin Media (NTL) is great. For instance, their service status number directs you to a page on their website.

Which would be great, if your internet was working.

Which on the occasion I used that number, it wasn't.

Aaaah NTL. Yeah, used to have that at my parents. Used to suck. Was good in the end.

Trying to get teh tinternet with Orange. They suck. Really. Spent the past 8 weeks trying to get it. :(

But yeah, good pricing. It's 8MB unlimited download limit only ?15 a month (including line rental) if you get a ?30 or more contract with them.

I think they use Wanadoo.

*stabs Orange*
